Did Federal Increase Velocity of 9BPLE?

It has been a while since I checked the velocity of Federal's 9mm 115gr JHP +p+, 9BPLE. I have a 4.6 inch threaded barrel on my G19 and I have a Walther PPQ with a 4.6 inch factory melonited barrel in it. In the past, especially before the white box packaging, I would be lucky to break 1,300fps. Just tested two lots of the white box today with an average lowest velocity out of the Glock at 1,351fps and an average highest velocity out of the PPQ of 1,379fps. I was astonished and checked some known velocity loads to see if the chronograph was on, and it was. The Melonite/Tennifer treated barrel on the PPQ always give higher velocities than stainless steel KKM barrels. I have never found a velocity advantage with stock Glock Barrels. Even so, with the other lot, the Glock with the KKM barrel average 1,361fps.

I know most people seem to want to go with other 9mm offerings for self defense, but I always felt confident with the 9BPLE when I carry the 9mm. I usually carry a 357Sig.

Hard to believe they would change anything after all these years.

It's a fun round to shoot.

Last I looked, Federal still listed the BPLE load, out of a 4" test barrel, at 1300fps. Dunno what the allowable +/- might be, though. I know some LE contracts vary in allowable velocity specs, like one I read which stated the ammo could exhibit a +/- 40fps variance.

You running the Walther Navy SD barrel? If you tried the load out of the standard 4" PPQ 9mm barrel, maybe you'd get closer to 1300fps. Imagine what you might get if you had the PPQ that came with the 5" barrel? ;)

Or, maybe you just a couple boxes from a production run that came out at the higher end of the normally allowable velocity range. :)

Going from memory and what's on the box here I was gonna say 1400fps but 1300 is probably what it said. I know I do remember it having a pretty high rating and these were about 3-4 years old and in the white box.

Think I'll go shoot a few myself.

Our State Police (Illinois) specs required the +P+ to do 1300 fps out of a S&W 59. My small department could piggy back onto the state contracts, several times we were told that Federal had won the contract but was later disqualified because the 9BPLE didn't make the spec. I know that chronographing various lots of Fed and Win from my Hi Power, the Win almost always gave 1300 instrumental velocity at 10 feet (typically about 1325) and the Federal seldom did (typically about 1275). Deduct another 25 fps for my G19 for either load. Last lot was from almost 10 years ago, so things may have changed.

I'm not sure the average dirtbag could tell the typical difference of 50 fps, both loads have equally good reputations.

Last I looked, Federal sealed the primers and bullets on the +P+ but Winchester did not.

Could be a warmer lot, I just ran some through my new XDS 9mm and they averaged just under 1,250 fps from the 3.3" bbl. The Gold Dot +P+ 115gr was right around 1,250 but seemed louder than the 9BPLE load.

    Try CorBon 115gr JHP +p. I get 1400 FPS in my G17.

I chronoed some 9bple the latter part of May and from my CZ75B got 1313 FPS. From the shorter CZ75D Compact, it registered 1286 FPS.

    Years ago I chrono'ed my 9BPLE and a 5 shot avg. clocked at 1320fps.

The Canadian RCMP load XM9001 is rated for 1250fps. Maybe some people got this stuff by mistake?

Dare they go higher than +p+ in their pressures?

Look I have used this ammo for years. It would not be uncommon for Federal to find a better powder that gives more velocity for the same pressure. I have also found that 1,370 fps is about the limit, or the round dramatically over expands and does not penetrate. I have checked several lots now, and I am sure of it. When it was sold in the silver box, you could not even get to 1,300 fps. Check out the velocities tnoutdoors9 got with an old silver box. It is great news. Now a great bullet, even better.

I have switched from CorBon 9mm rounds to Buffalo Bore 9mm +p+ 115gr XTP JHP rounds. They estimate 1400 FPS in a 4-inch barrel, so I can expect a bit more from my 4.6-inch G17.

You have an aftermarket barrel because the stock barrel is 4.49". Why would you put an aftermarket barrel into a carry gun?

How many BB rounds have you shot through your g!7 to verify proper functioning?

I got my barrel length wrong. It is a stock Glock barrel. And I haven't test fired anything in a long while. But in the past I have shot hot handloads using the 115gr Hornady XTP bullet with no problems. So I am confident that these BB +p+ rounds will work fine in my G17.

I agree. What was once a great round is now even better. And the best news is that it doesn't cost near as much as equivalent ammo from Corbon or Buffalo Bore.

I just chrono'ed the 9bple out of my Glock 19 yesterday. My avg velocity was 1292.2 fps, with a hi of 1296 and a low of 1289fps. 5 shot avg. I was pleased with those numbers.
