I mean we elected Obama, but how stupid do you think we are?

Could the electro magnet really do that? Could the laptop data really be destroyed? Just because Walter said so?

this was on the AMCTV.com site ....

    Would the magnet actually work?

I have a couple questions about whether the magnet would work. The first is that the info would have likely been on a memory chip. Would this be affected by a magnet? The other is that the evidence room is surrounded by reinforced concrete with lots of re-bar. Would the re-bar end up acting like a shield for the magnet?

Finally, the van gets pulled over by it's force. You'd need to have enough ferric pull from the evidence room to pull the van over, not just a few hundred pounds of assorted junk. If the re-bar was pulling the van, it would block the field from getting into the room.

Anyone know the physics of this stuff? I'd love for Mythbusters to do a BB special..

We tried some unscientific experiments with magnets and data storage on floppy disks a long time ago at work. I used a really powerful rare earth magnet and and a plastic cased 1.44 M floppy disk (for those of you old enough to remember those).

I put some files on the disk and stuck it to wall of my cubicle with the magnet. We left it there 5 minutes and then I check the disk. It was still readable. We repeated the experiment for longer and longer periods of time. It took about an hour to make the disk unreadable.

Even though our simple experiment showed that a strong magnet had little effect on a floppy disk, I suspect that the results would have been different with more important data. We suspect that the susceptibility of data to a magnet is directly proportional to the importance of the data.

It's early here and I'm tired, so I'm not sure if I am reading this right. But, are you saying that somehow the data on the disk determines how the magnet effects it? So, in other words if I have one disk with recipes for apple pie and another disk with AAR from the OBL raid that somehow the magnet will know that the second drive is more important and somehow earase that data more/better than the apple pie recipe drive?

I've thought Breaking Bad was stretching the science thing since season 1.

    Seriously....its just a TV show.

Its just like Falling Skies having a supposedly 40mm Anti aircraft gun on the back of a pickup truck.

A drug empire run out of a Fried Chicken business

A Cancer Stricken man cooking meth and not getting caught, even though his Brother in law is a DEA agent.

You need to suspend belief a little bit.

The magnet might not work, but it wasn't a jump the shark moment. The writing is superb, and will continue to be so. It's not real life, so even if the magnet wouldn't work, the show can pretend.

They have one more "season" but the question is whether they will do them all this summer, or half this summer and half next. I suspect they will split the two.

You do realize that Walt, Jesse, Hank and Skylar are fictional? Don't you? It's a TV show, not real life? You do get that....... right?

It is a collarary of Murphy's Law. "The more important something is, the more likely it will be lost."
