Last night I had a very interesting conversation with 2 anti gun people, one of them what I might term a rabid anti gun person and the 2nd is possibly a future convert (with a lot of work) after our discussion.

They had expressed their feelings about an unfortunate incident / tragedy here in a small west virginia town a short while back.

But I asked them to play devil's advocate and tell me why more people should be armed, and to my surprise they actually came up with some very good reasons, many of which I have seen here time and time again.

Can I now for the sake of argument ask the good folk's of GT here to do the opposite, tell me why you believe people civilians should be disarmed.

Let fly, anything goes, just nothing that might get the thread locked.

I really look forward to seeing what comes up.

The GUNS are not the problem.
    The probblem is the PEOPLE.

Take away the guns, then take away the knives, then take away the clubs, then take away the rocks, then........

Civilians should be disarmed in order to prevent them resisting the absolute power of The State. Armed civilians are able to protect themselves from predators among their ranks, making them less dependent on The State, thereby threatening its power. This ability to provide for their own defense will lead civilians to consider other avenues of self-empowerment, such as providing for their own health care and sustenance. Each of these "empowerments" is a chink in the armor of The State and should be avoided whenever possible.

If you're going to argue "for" disarmament, then gwalchy's on the beam here.

Argue collectivism vs. individualism and how the only reason there's violence is because the people that earned what they have aren't SHARING with other, sadly less FORTUNATE, people.

The theory (which doesn't work, but don't let that detail dissuade you as it doesn't communists) is that if you remove the economic differences among people then you'll remove the greed/envy - which you can then argue will remove the need for the means to protect yourself.

At the end - just so they can see that you're really taking this example too far, you can answer "what about rape?" Well, the women should be SHARING, right? I'm sure that'll drive the point home to the female half of the audience that the world just doesn't work "collectively".

    Good luck!

Civilians are not trust worthy to own guns. Regulations wont get out of hand. If it is to protect them then it is ok and for their own good. Only important people needs guns for protection. We must take the moral high ground and comply just like the Jews in Ger..... oh wait...

Guns are dangerous dude! They can KILL people. They make it EASY to kill. Yes I can kill you with my bare hands, but it takes a lot more effort and it's a lot harder to kill on a mass level without one.

So knowing their sole purpose is death, how can we tolerate them as a society? TAKE THEM ALL AWAY, then I will have less to fear when I take my children out to public places.

For self defense, we should all learn the gentle ways of Aikido and embrace love and harmony of the world around us.

Take away guns and there's no more death or wars.

Forget about all those minor disagreements way back in history, before guns.

There is not one rational argument a thinking person can make for disarming people. You cannot violate the innate rights of people to defend themselves from harm.

If you have a gun in your home, you're far more likely, statistically, to injure yourself or a loved-one, than an intruder. The likelihood of using the gun in self-defense doesn't offset the risk of having it in your home.

(I threw up a little bit in my mouth while typing that.)

That argument should always be countered with a lecture on statistical significance. ;)

Great post. That sums it up completely. Where do we stop? I guess we could cut off everyone's arms and legs and pull their teeth and put helmets on them so they couldn't head butt anyone. Then the world would be blissful and peace on earth would finally be acheived. The left wing/liberal nuts are and always will be insane. Maybe it's them that should leave our great country, since they hate it so much.

It would allow State governments to redirect all of their gun control budgets to some other worthy purpose, like distributing condoms in grammer school or reeducating our children love the new Socialist way of life.
