DENVER - On the brick outside a masonry office in Northwest Denver, a billboard designed to pay tribute to a family and its craft is getting a second look.

Paul Clark hired an artist to spray paint a mural outside his building last month, using photos to create a display of workers and his son - all part of the business.

"It's just a tribute to the people that we work with, I wanted to show people what we do," Clark said.

Neighbors near 44th and Umatilla Streets noticed one painting in particular.

The mural features Clark pointing a handgun, while wearing a jersey from a shooting competition.

Clark says he received a bronze medal for a senior competition in Indonesia in 2004, and he felt the painting best described his passion for the weekend sport.

The president of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Group in Denver, Eugene Howard, says not every neighbor sees it that way.

"We've had some folks that would like to see it removed. Others are asking that it simply be modified," Howard said.

Howard says the art is appreciated, and so is the business in their neighborhood, but he explains the message has been lost along the way.

"It is lost without that translation and I think people are reacting to what they see on the surface without understanding the story that goes behind it," Howard said.

Both Clark and his artist say they are willing to remove the mural featuring Clark with the gun, but Clark says only one neighbor has complained to him.

"If it raises too much concerns, I'll change the gun to the trophy that I won and have me holding the trophy," Clark said.

That'd be a damned shame. It's a good looking mural. Screw the folks who are :crying: :crying: :crying: for him to change it.

Like most art, people see what they want to see when they look at it.

Maybe the president of the neighborhood association should be what gets removed from his position of "authority".

Maybe he should deal with "would like to see" and "have asked" the same way I do...

"Great. Thanks for the input." and carry on.

That neighborhood is infested with California liberals. Back during the housing bust of the late 80s, Califonians bought up blocks, sight unseen, of run down barrios. It has gradually transformed to an upscale neighborhood, but is still completely surrounded by run down barrios.

They live in their own little libtard world called Sunnyside.

Nice mural, but it kind of looks like he is participating in some kind of street shootout instead of a shooting competition.

However, if I was him I would be more concerned about possible vandals spray painting their tags all over the mural.

The mural clearly shows someone firing a handgun in an olympic or other competition. Even if you aren't a shooter you should be able to realize that. It's a lot less "violent" than a lot of modern rap lyrics. Most of all it's nobody's business but the owner's.

I Agree...he should alter that Mural!!!

that mural should show him shooting ONE HANDED!!! In his right hand, the weapon....his left hand should be elevated above the the right hand FLYING THE BIRD at the neighborhood association!! Let the Association choose which they would prefer! THAT IS THE ONLY COMPROMISE THAT I WOULD OFFER! PERIOD!

Do you remember the ad Johnny Cash did when he released his last album? It said something like: "Mr. Cash would like to thank country music for its support on his latest album." He was dressed in black with a scowl and flipping off the camera. Priceless.
