But if they extend unemployment insurance further, the unemployment numbers will rise (again)...

The demokrats must extend unemployment insurance. They have to pay for the votes they bought for the recent election.

I wondered how long it would take for this subject to become the "crisis of the day".

Doesn't anyone in Washington understand that a multitude of people getting unemployment benefits won't even look for a job (they would pretend to look for one) until their benefits are about up. 26 weeks and out would put a lot more people to work doing something besides watching TV all day. But Pelosi says unemployment benefits stimulate the economy (or was that food stamps).

Let them extend it to forever. We can get the collapse over and done with that much sooner.

Was reading in today's paper that extending the current level of long-term unemployment benefits another year would add 300,000 jobs to the economy.

There are help wanted signs up all over the country. A big reason these jobs go unfilled is because of the extension of unemployment benefits.

Look at the chart below. This shows the number of people transitioning from unemployment to work or self-support. It is from Denmark. In 1998 (red line), unemployment benefits ran for 5 years and (big surprise) most people found work right around the time benefits ran out. The green line show the same data for 2005, when the law was changed to limit unemployment to 4 years. And again, most found work right around the time unemployment ran out.

Is anyone really surprised by this? Congress has extended unemployment benefits to 99 weeks and never before have their been so many long-term unemployed. Just a coincidence, right?

Next, job is actively searched for, if not found.

When you pay people to do nothing, don't be surprised if they do nothing.

Oh, snap. You've just found the one small flaw in an otherwise perfect plan.

If only the liberals got that.

Gosh! I can't imagine how much employees are paying (through their employers) for all this insurance!

What? They're not? So how's it insurance then?

Welfare. Government cheese (err filet mignon).
