Grandma just called my dad and said she had a deer wrapped up in the barbed wire fence.

We no longer have a game warden to take care of it.

If I went out there, Do I have any other choice but to shoot it?

No much. If he/she is hurt they get pretty agitated.

Around here you can shoot first and then call the warden afterward. It is always pretty evident what happened beforehand just by the scene.

My aunt hit a large buck with her car a few years back and her BF later tracked the animal and put him out of his misery. He called the warden and told him what he'd done afterward. We're still small town America around here and most folks are honest about such things.

Well, a few months ago I would have said that you should try to free it. But speaking from second hand experience, the deer is going to freak out and get himself hurt more...you will most likely get cut and/or kicked in the process, and you will probably have to shoot it anyway.

It may be possible to cut the wire a few feet away from it and hope for the best though...

    Good luck!

    thought about that.

Then I take the chance of it getting even more entangled and hurt trying to get free.

Guess it depends on the scene.

Well, I guess I had better go. Shes not answering her phone, Im worried she tried to free it herself.

Shes a tough old farm lady but I dont think she knows how brutal deer can be.

    Update later.

You may be best to check with the warden first. In PA you CAN NOT shoot a wounded animal. Always thought you could but game commision flipped out when I called years ago about a doe that was hit by a car in front of my house. Back was visibly broken in 1 spot (upon butchering there was a 2nd break) and it was obvious the deer was not going to make it. I called PA game commision to seek advise and was told very clearly DO NOT DO ANYTHING until a warden comes out. An hour later it was detirmined that they wern't coming any time soon and a "passing motorist" dispatched the deer. When I notified the game commision of this they flipped out wanting to know if I had a description of the vehicle of the person that dispatched the deer. "Nope never saw the guy before in my life". Just becareful that your act of kindness doesn't result in a fine. Just my $.02.

Just call Readthesenikes, you know the bodyguard, and he will roundhouse kick that deer back into the wilderness. He is more awesome than Chuck Norris :whistling:
