I've got a problem. Three pistols that I really want have come available and all for the same price. 1. S&W 1911 commander sized 9mm. Three mags, box and all the accessories. New condition. 2. Colt Commander in 9mm, Aftermarket grips, two magazines, no box. Excellent condition 3. S&W 4506 45 acp, three mags, box and all original equipment.
Practicality appears to favor the Smith 9mm as it appears to be in the best condition. However, nostalgia favors the 4506. I had bought a new 645 when I was a young patrolman and six months later out city council decided 45 acp "was to aggressive and sent the wrong message" so 45 was no longer available as a duty caliber and I was forced to sell it to get another duty weapon. I really missed the reliability and accuracy of that big joker. The Colt, well because it's a Colt Commander. First world problems I know.:(:(

    That's a tough one actually.
I've a Commander sized 9mm and although the capacity is lower than a poly-wonder-pistol, it is a fantastic shooter due to the weight.
That being said, the .45 is of course, god's round.

Never owned a 4506 but since the other two are probably a lot easier to find later on, that would help make up my mind.
Had to laugh at the .45 being too “aggressive and sending the wrong message” policy comment made by a city council desk jockey though LOL. It’s a shame people with no real-world experience are put in the position of making such judgements. I would think ANY caliber could be considered “aggressive” when pointed at your face. However, when your hand is forced on the streets, that should be the EXACT message you are trying to send! :)

I'd go Colt and 4506 last

I have to vote 4506. Those are getting harder and harder to find in great shape.

I say as I open up Gunbroker in my browser.........damn you............

I have regretted passing on a nice LE trade in 4506 for about 15 years now.

You want the 4506; easy to tell from reading your post. Best choice. Screw "practical"; plus you probably have enough 9's. Nothing like a 230 gr. bomb.

4506 is the only choice if you ask me.
