My wife totalled her Honda. Not wanting a payment, she used the insurance money to buy a Chrysler PT Cruiser with 30k miles.

So, all goes fine during the 20 mile or so test drive. Nice car. Clean. No issues I could find. Nothing obvious, and nothing even hinted at. Clear title and history (it had been owned by a local insurance lady who got the cancer ... RIP).

Got it home Saturday night. Got up Sunday, and tried to start it ... click-click-click-click. Won't start. Try again. More clicks. Then nothing. Not even a click.

Damn it. We haven't paid yet, and have signed no papers with the broker.

    What does the braintrust think?

Could it be that simple? I forgot to add ... tried to jump it, but no joy.

Electrical seems fine. Lights work. Radio works. Power locks work.

Sounds like a drained battery. Did you leave something on? Not unheard of in an unfamiliar car.

You may have a bailment agreement since no papers have been signed. If so and you want out, you pay X per mile and Y per day starting when you took delivery.

Send it back. Those cars are horrendous. At least in my not so humble opinion.

Clean connections to the battery. Just had to do that on my truck. Everything in the truck worked but starter could not draw enough amps through bad connection.

Check fluid level in the battery too.

It;s an extended test drive. I don't think anything was left on. Who know? COuld a dome light do that? I guess it could, the garage is unheated and if you're in CO you know how cold it's been at night.

dead battery, faulty starter solenoid, or starter relay.
Who knows, they could have quick charged the battery before you took it out to drive. I'd have it examined by another party for good measure. PT Cruiser? junk in my book. Heard all kind of bad things about them, sadly.

THE KEY!!! Seriously, it happened to my brother. He bought a used car that had 2 keys only one of them wasn't chipped so it wouldn't start the car but everything else worked. He was getting pretty ticked until his girlfriend tried the other key and it started right up.

If theres no chip in the key it wont do anything the op said it went click click click which means the car was trying to start. Sounds like the battery to me.

A highly drained battery, or even an old worn out battery could very easily cause that and a simple jump not work.

Yes a dome light could certainly do it, ask me how I know.

PT keys are chipped from the very beginning so this is a possibility.
