FIREBAUGH, Calif. — A Central Valley man who crashed his van, killing his three children aboard, is under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance.

Sheriff's officials say Aref Kareem Mohammed of Firebaugh crashed his van head-on into another vehicle in southwest Madera County on Tuesday afternoon, killing his twin 6-year-old boys and their 3-year-old sister. Mohammed was not seriously hurt.

Authorities say the 34-year-old Mohammed faces multiple charges, including DUI with gross negligence, child endangerment and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Officials say Mohammed was wearing his seat belt but his children — Ahmaed, Gahassan and Fatima — were not. The four passengers in the other car suffered minor to major injuries.

Mohammed has been released on $100,000 bail.

Seeing TBO as the thread starter, I hoped it would be another one of his hilariously misleading titles. Unfortunately... RIP kids. :crying:

I would rather be dead than knowing that I had just killed my child.

$100,000 bail, that's a joke. He's on a airplane on his way back the Middle East as we read this.

We need a way to incarcerate judges who allow such low bail amounts. $100,000 might have scared a perp 30 years ago. Add a couple more zero's and you'll know where he is when his trial comes up.

Of course you realize that bail amounts are often set in legislature (varies by state) and judges have little leeway in how much to set for the particular crimes in front of them.

Here's a great example from the state the guy was arrested in: http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/bail/pdf/felony.pdf

    ETA: from the schedule:
    192.5
    192.5(a)
    192.5(b)
    192.5(c)
VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER - Operating a vessel
    DUI with gross negligence ..........................................................................................100,000
    DUI without gross negligence .......................................................................................50,000
    With gross negligence...................................................................................................50,000

I stand corrected. Even with seperate counts for each child his bail would have been $300,000; the state has a lot of things to worry about right now but this issue needs to be visited. The bail schedules are woefully outdated.

    Sad for the kids.

Call me jaded, and cynical but.

    1. Where is/was mom?
    2. Why did he have on his seatbelt, but they did not?

What's the difference? The guy has a lifetime prison sentence now of knowing he killed his kids.

I think the more important question is how was a Muslim (well, based on the name presumably a Muslim) drunk? They're forbidden from drinking alcohol. Looks like Islam's prohibitive policies produce people who binge, and do so particularly irresponsibly because of their lack of experience?

I always find this kind of reasoning fascinating.

People from Middle East are not Muslim by default any more than people from any other region subscribe to that region's predominant religion by default.

Everyone with a name that sounds a little like something from the Middle East is not Middle Eastern and, even if they were, they would not be Muslim by default.

Further, much like followers of all faiths, not all Muslims follow the laws of Islam, certainly not all the time. Get on a plane leaving Saudi Arabia, you'll never see more drunk Muslims gathered in the same place as the fusilage of that vessel just before landing in another country.

Tragic. I wonder where the guy's from.

I read some of a book titled In the Land of Invisible Women: A Female Doctor's Journey in the Saudi Kingdom that my wife checked out from the library, and in it she talks about all the kids who came in to the ER because their father's were driving stupidly.
