While I was waiting on my Pam to get here I set out on a mission to find and buy the perfect strap for my watch. Problem is there are so many great straps out there it is a very hard decision. I spent tons of time reading about straps and learning as much as I could. Trying to make up my mind about what strap to purchase and then came up with this stupid insane idea to make my own ya ya I know. Well lets just say it’s NO walk in the park so to all you strap makers out there my hat is off to you.

Finally I was able to find some information and I set out on this difficult journey. I gathered some basic tools and sat down with some poop leather that I found around the house. Lets just say my first strap was not even worthy of taking pictures of.

I started to talk with an old buddy who used to work with leather and he had some old vintage leather lying around that he gave me. This stuff is just amazing, it was given to him in the 80’s and he has had it ever since. An old friend who brought it over from Italy a long time ago gave it to him, he thinks the leather is from the 1930’s. It looks smells and feels amazing. Before I would even mess with this stuff I spent some time practicing with some tan scrap leather that he gave me to work with. It took me over 12 hours to make what you see below. It is not even close to looking good or finished and I have a long way to go, but thought I would post some pictures of my work.

The edges are not finished I have some Edge stuff on the way to finish them up but you get the idea.

The dark brown leather is the vintage leather that my buddy gave me it’s just amazing and pictures do not do it justice.

Well tell me what you guys think. Please remember these are my first straps ever!

Looks good. Did you hand sew it, or use a machine?

stop using the awl-for-awl NOW. it's screwing up your work.

get a pull awl, and pre-punch the holes. rotsa ruck finding the needles.. i bought the last 11 tandy owned @ 4$ each.

they still exist *somewhere* .. but my 11 is probably a 50 year supply. i'm set. they still sell the handle (chuck). 15$

till you find the correct needles you can USE the awl-for-awl (yuck!) . .
but PRE-PUNCH THE HOLES.. (a stub of ice pick sharpened, & a short handled 2lb sledge or ball peen) .. throw that damn rawhide mallet in the trash.

Nice work. You need to learn how to dress the edges. There are several methods. But it will make your work look cleaner and neater.

I think those will look great on a Pannie! Congrats and keep at it. Soon you'll be making some that will look great with a Patek.

Thanks a lot guys, I just got my edge stuff in the mail and it makes the edges look a lot better. I will post some updated pictures in a bit. The straps are hand swen, I use the back stitch method will a pull awl work for this?

I guess I need to find a pull awl

I'm impressed! I've never tried leather-work, but I can tell that anything I tried making would end up looking like absolute ****.
