I've been reading a little about both of them and I really like the way they look. I'll probably only use it for HD and plinking. Im pretty set on buying either one of these or a Ruger p89. The grip on the 39 looks very comfortable, I figure it can't be any worse than my G19.

One thing that has confused me a little is the naming of all of them. I know the 39 corresponds with the 639 and the 59 with the 659, but are there any others? I'd like to know the different models and differences in them.

Also, are there specific points of wear I should look out for?

Any help is appreciated. I just want to learn a little more about them before I hit the gun show next weekend.

    Good aluminum framed pistols.

    I have a 59 and love it.

That's what I've been reading. I'm still confused on S&W's naming system though.

I eventually deciphered part of it.

    First gen:(two numbers)
    39
    59

    Second gen:(three numbers
    639
    659

    Third gen:(four numbers)
    5906

Apparently different numbers also mean different things as well.

S&W autos are very underrated and reliable. I have a S&W 459 (bought new in 1985) and have over 5,000 rounds through it, without a single malfunction.

I have owned and carried 2 Mod.39's and one Mod.50 (all blue). Very nice weapons and wish Smith would re-produce them in their Classics Collection. I would buy one in a minute.

Years ago I have owned and shot 2 Model 39s and 1 Model 59. IMHO for the times they were great guns and I never had a problem with them. I would like to see Smith reproduce them in their Classics line.
