Worked up some 308 match loads and they shot great. So I then spent a few evenings loading up 2400 identical rounds only to discover that the sizing die had backed off just enough to prevent loading in a match chamber. They load fine in my Ruger but just won't chamber in the Remington M40.

Would you pull the bullets and resize or just shoot them in other guns?

DAMN IT! I said if for you... ;)

I don't have any advise for you unfortunately. I did hear of a guy that pulled 4k .308 from this exact scenario.

I'll stay tuned to see if there is a puller with a warranty. I have some 9mm someone loaded from the 70's that i want to pull, but i haven't bought one yet.

Oh btw, i forget which thread it was where you stated how your avatar pic came to life...badass, photo and story.

Got a semi auto .308?? then i could be more helpful :)

Wow, I don't know what to tell you really. If money isn't a big issue I guess I would shoot them in other guns. That many to pull is really going to be a PITA but I am sure you already know that

Sorry, but pulled projectiles <> match loads.

Can't think of a puller out there that will not do some damage to the projectile, however minor. Damaged projectiles do not make for match ammo. People I know making match ammo, do it in small batches, being anal over each and every round. Slow going making good match ammo.

It's almost more fun watching paint dry.

Shoot them in other rifles. If you have played with match bullets before which sounds like you have then we already know they will be slightly damaged when pulled no matter how careful you are. Sorry !!

Take a spare .308 resizing die and have the neck opened up till it will at best barely touch the sides of the neck of the round. Set the shoulder back to the degree necessary that you will be able to chamber the round. This will likely require a "cut and fit" approach. If this process works, you will be able to use the rounds in your M-40. If the process is not successful, I would use a collet die to pull the bullets. I would then size the cases appropriately for the M-40 and load up the same bullets with the same powder charges. I would take care to load each bullet in the case from which it was pulled. If fired for practice, I would note results carefully in terms of on target results and the condition of the actual bullet. The difference in accuracy might turn out to be not as significant as might first be thought. I would not be inclined to use such rounds in a standard type rifle. JMHO. Sincerely. Brucev.

You can bump the shoulder back with this die on loaded cartridges.
Run a few thru the die and check how they run in your M40.
Your specs will change but if the accuracy is acceptable it sure beats pulling them down.

Yep, that does suck. Is it the shoulder that needs to be bumped back or the base that's too large?

I'd try a Lee FCD and see if you can skate by wit it. I wouldn't pull that many rounds. As already mentioned, no matter how you pull them they won't be "match grade".

The shoulder. I can see a bright spot on the shoulder when I try to chamber them. Maybe we will just chase rabbits with 308 this year and reload from scratch later.

Another vote for the Redding body die.

I use them on my 1050 at the very last station just to be sure I bumped the shoulder and got the base of the case. Cant hurt, might help.

Wow, There are several lessons to be learned from this thread.
Not sure if it should be categorized as funny and scary or just plain scary.
