My 3 year old Lab has a cruciate and a meniscus tears of left knee. I'm scheduling a surgical consult.

Have any members gone through this with their pup. He's a hunting dog and I'd like to hunt him in the future.

Any experience or opinions on QLF vs. TPLO procedures?

    Thanks for your help

Depends on how much they have to cut out and where. Pup will never be 100% again and the condition will deteriorate over time. How fast will depend on how hard he's run. Get the consult first and then decide if he's going to retire early or not.

I had a Lab who needed ACL repair and it didn't go so well.

Did the surgery (rear leg) at about age 2 or 3, and she rejected the material. Resulted in osteomyelitis causing a hole in the knee area to weep pus. Removed the monofiliment (or whatever they used) and the leg basically just became lame. She would never put any real weight on it and a few years later, jumped out of the truck and shattered the bones in the leg. Had to amputate the leg.

Tell you what though, that dog never knew she didn't have that rear leg. She ran and swam like nobody's business. Unfortunately it eventually took it's toll on the remaining rear leg and got arthritis in it. She lived to be about 11 before we had to put her down.

    All the other limbs compensate.

Best to turn a busted working dog into a faithful loving pet.

Yes, I'm willing to do that. We live across the road from the hunting club though and he knows when the birds are around. He's all about the sound of a shotgun. The boy loves to run in the woods and swim in the spring.
