So just as I was about to take a much overdue siesta from a long event filled ay at work, our tones went off and dispatch told us we had Police bringing us a patient.

PD brings us a 16 year old male that was fighting, hallucinating, completely out of his mind. We were told that he drank at LEAST one entire bottle of over the counter cough medicine to get high and "Robotrip" Now I've been doing this for several years and while I've had tons of heroin, crack and every other drug you can imagine as an OD call, this was my first "Robotrip" call.

After putting him in the ambulance to check him out his pupils got HUGE, his blood pressure was 172/102, heart rate 186, breathing was rapid, shallow and irregular and his skin looked like he was dropped in boiling water, bright red and hot. During the seizure he got Versed which did a great a great job of stopping the seizure, then he stopped breathing and blood pressure dropped to 70/40 ish. We had to bag him, tube him and breath for him the entire way. This kid is now on a ventilator, completely unresponsive to pain or any stimulation and in general was not doing well when we left.

Parents talk to your kids about things, not just pot, drinking etc. Also talk to them about unconventional things like this. Jess and I had about a 30 minute discussion with Colby (12 year old son) this morning over breakfast about all the dumb things kids do to "get high" It's worth 30 minutes of your life, 30 minutes i'm positive these parents would like to have back.

I hate the taste of cough medicine and can't stand even taking one dose/serving cup of it.

It's good that you put GT parents on notice that "yes, I saw it happen and it can happen to your child." But most parents will just think "not my little Johnny or Jenny..."

    Amen.

It's amazing what our ideas our young ones can come up with, we get 'em every night in our ER.

(33 years as an RT, I've seen a bunch)

I think it was "bath salts" too. I've heard of alot of people in my area robotripping over the years and nothing like this has ever been oberved here. Bath salts are common here now, and most of the time they get intibated "sp?" because they stop breathing. A quick websearch confirms the bath salt symptoms. Maybe he did a combo hoping to get "really" high :steamed::steamed: hopefully if he makes it through this he learned a lesson.....and get's his *** beat..:whistling:

Thanks for the heads up. My two kids are still way too young to use (4 & 3) but I already have "talks" about how bad drugs are and how they could or wind up worthless bums. Never too young to talk to your kids and try your damndest to steer them in the right direction.

Isn't cough medicine just alcohol? So he drinks a bottle of Nyquil? Much less alcohol than many of our GT members will enjoy this weekend.

Something else has got to be at play.

Sounds more potent than cough medicine. But a good point made.

Thank Lil Wayne and Miley Cyrus for helping to perpetuate this type of idiotic behavior in pop culture media for teens to emulate. Half of Weezie's songs are about abusing prescription cough syrup and Miley had been photographed smoking synthetic pot. Most 14 year olds are familiar with both trends.

Reminds me of when people drink mouth wash to get drunk, can also turn out quite bad. From my limited experience in such matters, I doubt he was on just the cough syrup. However, he also could have had an allergic reaction to something plus the effects the cough syrup would have on a normal person without an extra allergy kick.

Tragic call to get, sorry you had to take it, thank you for your efforts.

I believe it was indeed a "robotrip"

    Dextromethorphan or "DXM"

    Symptoms of overdose may include:

    nausea

    vomiting

    drowsiness

    dizziness

    unsteadiness

    changes in vision

    difficulty breathing

    fast heartbeat

hallucinating (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)

    seizures

coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time)

It does seem a bit extreme for a robotrip. I've seen a few people do it, and while they got really freakin' paranoid while on it, I've never seen those kinds of symptoms. Like others have said, it sounds more like bath salts.
