Man Escapes Cougar: 'Dude, I Don't Feel Like Dying Today'
October 13, 202012:04 AM ET
Twenty-six-year-old Kyle Burgess was on a 10-mile run on Saturday up Slate Canyon in Provo, Utah. He told the Deseret News that when he saw four cougar cubs on the trail, he took out his phone and started filming.
But when Burgess saw the young animals' mother come along, he knew he was in trouble. For the next six minutes, he recorded their encounter.
The mother cougar followed him — hissing, growling and threatening — as Burgess backed away, keeping his eyes locked on her. Mostly, he alternated between yelling a stream of profanities at the mother mountain lion and calling the animal "dude."
"Dude, you're scary!" Burgess tells the animal at one point, adding: "You're a (bleep) scary kitty cat." A few minutes later, after she repeatedly lunges in Burgess' direction, he says, "Come on, dude, I don't feel like dying today."
Amazingly, Burgess came away totally unharmed after he picked up a rock and hurled it at her. According to the Deseret News, a local official with Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources, Scott Root, told Burgess: "You did awesome." But, Root added, people should consider not running alone on trails.
I saw that on the news today. Nothing like the cougars that chased me in my younger days. I think they're all in wheelchairs now.
Wife showed that to me yesterday. There was no mention in the article if he changed his underwear then or when he got home
They're the one predator that scares the bejeebers out of me. You can't trust them
Besides the obvious "should have had a gun" reply, let me be the first to also say, "there were rocks all over the place from when you first saw the animal, you didn't need to walk backwards for 6 minutes."
Reason to own a gun.
Title made me think this was about Senior Ladies hunting for young guys.
I’d want a Glock 23 with a hi-cap magazine.
Getting chased by an apex predator, better get this on film.....
When you see baby animals, especially baby predators about, it’s time to unass as mommy ain’t too far away. He’s lucky.
People forget that when we are out in nature we are the bottom of the food chain. Walking about in nature unarmed. About as dumb as going to ****et without condoms.
I came here thinking this was about older women...
No reason it can't be. Here we have a mature cougar sleeping off the evening's events.
Ya. I would have had a handgun. Wild Animals get warning shots. Prolly would have taken off with one round. I also thought about the rocks. But easy to Easy Chair Quarterback.
Yeah I was totally let down and mislead by the title.
I hike like a mother trucker in far West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado often. Always carry.
Cougars can be scary but they can also be fun.
That was my first though also. There was point early in the video where he passed a mound of rocks on the side of the road. I would have gotten behind that, and started hurling rocks. If she got beaned on the head, she likely would have backed off.
... going to ****et ...
... without condoms ...
Yikes. My heart rate got elevated just watching it.
Did he throw a rock at the end?
