Where exactly did a grad student in a crappy apartment get the money for two glocks, an 870, an AR, a drum mag for the ar, extra mags, 3000 rounds of .223, 3000 rounds of .40 S&W, 300 rounds of 12 ga. and freaking body armor.

That is about six to eight thousand dollars worth of equiptment.

And that is just what was mentioned by the chief.

Credit card? Who knows really. I'm sure that is the last thing they really care about, but it is an interesting thought.

Saving grad loans or just independently wealthy. May have had a job. But that was a lot of hardware!

From Mama, sounds like she was fronting his lifestyle. It is beginning to sound like he was one of those guys forced out of the basement into the real world.

Remember the first things she was quoted as saying? She know he was off the Richter scale. I think it will come up they covered up some of his issues.

Anywhere. It's not like he was worried about paying it back.

Also, I don't think it's that crazy a sum. What kind of car did he drive? His apartment was like $500/mo.

When I was a student I was broke too... but I still had plenty of cash for alcohol and guns* (which is why I was broke).

As well, he was (past tense) a student. Not an active student. Maybe he had a job, something we don't know yet. Maybe he had student loans out the kazoo (most med school students have those loans) and has been slowly collecting.

Said the same thing to my wife. Ammo alone was a chunk of change, then the firearms, wow!

Well, you don't buy it all at once. I've got 10 times that much stuff but I buy a little at a time.

Seems like it was all purchased in just the last two months.

In one of the interviews with a neighbor, Tom Mai, a retired electrical engineer who lives in the Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood where Holmes grew up, said he remembers Holmes as a very shy, well-mannered young man who was heavily involved in their local church. (l.a. times via drudge)

Strange also that no other press has dug into this.

It's still early in the investigation. Soon you will know more than you care to about Mr. Holmes.

Many interwebz people say: the ease of college students to obtain credit cards and unused student loans are probably a factor.
I could amass some "dream gear" if I had no fear of paying anything back. I think we all could...

Didn't they say he was on unemployment?? If he never got a job after graduating college how did he collect this? Maybe using our stellar welfare system or getting money from his parents.

It is really not that much money for someone who intends to commit an act which will ensure they will never be liable for the debt.

Back in the mid 80's in my first year of college, I had 3 credit cards. Between the 3 there was more than 18K in available credit. No job, no viable means of income, student loans, etc. I don't think that it would have been that hard to get that gear. Like someone above mentioned, Mama may have been supporting him.

When I was in college I had a $55,000 limit on the single credit card that I owned.

If I had something like this planned I would buy whatever I wanted, because paying it back wouldn't be a concern.
