Talk about paybacks: An Ashtabula, Ohio man, the suspect in a Tuesday evening hit-skip collision, found himself being cut from his crushed vehicle just minutes after the first wreck.

The suspect, whose name was not released, driving a blue Buick Regal near West Avenue and Prospect Road, hit a car near the intersection and then took off down Nathan Avenue. Just minutes later, at about 8:30 p.m. the suspect’s car was slammed broadside by an eastbound Norfolk Southern Railway System train.

City police and firefighters responded to the scene, where the suspect was found trapped inside his car but alive. Firefighters used power tools to extricate the man from his car. He was transported by Community Care Ambulance to Ashtabula County Medical Center.

The victim of the earlier hit-skip collision arrived minutes after the second collision and identified the suspect’s car at the railroad crossing. The passenger side of the car was caved in, and both front and rear doors were destroyed by the collision and subsequent work performed by rescue crews.

Sgt. Perry Johnson, at the scene, said the investigating officer, Patrolman Tim Hoskins, suspected the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Officers detected the odor of alcohol when they approached the suspect’s vehicle.

Johnson said police have a tentative identification on the suspect but that it had not been confirmed. Traffic was detoured around crossings at Main Avenue, West Avenue and Nathan Avenue for about an hour, while the train remained near the collision site.
