So I had to go to Omaha to pick up my company car. The company does not let us smoke in the car, so I grab a smoke when I stop. As I was driving across Iowa I was getting a little stir crazy. After 200 miles of driving in a straight line I was starting to pray for a curve in the road. I decided to pull over for a smoke.

I pulled into a rest area. A 1 porta-potty, completely deserted rest area. It was 4* out. I got out and lit up a smoke while I cleaned some chunks of ice off of the car. I was a couple of minutes into my smoke when an Iowa State trooper rolls up in an SUV and lights me up. He rolls down his window and asks me what I am doing. I said I am cleaning up some ice off my car. He says "you're smoking". I said "yeah??" He informs me that I am not allowed to smoke in a rest area unless I am in my car. I have to say, I have never heard of that. But he let me go.

Never heard of that myself. Can you find a reference to that statute or law?

He said there was a sign, but I didn't see it. I suppose it has to do with being on gov't property. He didn't like it when I asked if I should just pull off along side the highway to smoke so I wouldn't be in the rest area.

LOL, Damn outside in a parking lot? That's retarded. Don't think I'll patronize Omaha then because I'd laugh at the cop and the stupid law and probably end up in more trouble. You get more second hand carbon monoxide on the side of an interstate than you would second hand smoke from someone outside in a parking lot.

Yes, cops of any type tend to not appreciate it when you're a smart-ass to them. The guy could have written you a ticket and was already letting you off with a warning, and you decide it's time for some snark?

He let the OP know something was illegal and just told him not to do it. That makes him a tool?

It never fails to astound me that people get bent out of shape when a cop tries to be helpful. The guy didn't know it was against the law, and the cop just let him know. Didn't write him up, didn't threaten, didn't get nasty about it, just said "hey, can't do that here" and everyone thinks he's the most evil person on the planet. Simply astounding.

so in reversal what is snark about saying " about pulling off the roadway on side of road and taking a smoke ??? nothing . its just cops think its snarky whenever their orders are offered on a rebuttal .

i would have left and pulled on side of road for a smoke , since doing that is not illegal but a rest area is :upeyes:

there are plenty of bs laws that go unchallenged , but at 4 degrees at a rest stop this officer is so bored to pull in and light up a guy lighting up ???? roflmao / stupid

and for the record regular people also dont like smartass remarks from cops
