An American invasion will be received probably very warmly.

    Good story.

I wonder if the US called for assistance or the Swedes all of a sudden saw something on their radar and said “ WhereTF did that come from “ ?

    Thanks for sharing this story.

My Father in law actually developed some bit of tech for the Blacbird and did not even know it until they retired the plane. He was then invited to a cermony at the Smithsonian when the plane was put on display there.

I was hoping it was this incident. Happened in 1986 though.

I was just there. I love the blackbird, and the stories from the people who flew and worked with them are always entertaining and fascinating.

The blackbird is the star attraction at that museum, and there is a freaking space shuttle and the Enola Gay there! That says a lot for the SR71.

You had better explain what I missed to me then. All I read was the Swedes were vectored to the target for ID.

Did the USAF/CIA call the controller and say send them an escort, PLEASE. Or did the SR driver say he would not mind some friendly company? Or did the Swedes just realize a UFO suddenly appeared on the scopes.

BTW, I went to missile school in Vandenberg with an weapons controller based in West Germany for a few years. He would tell stories of the Russians “ skirting “ the borders and sometimes shadowing friendlies and he had to vector a few guys up to them to give a look see.

Captain Walter brought a BMW back from Germany when he came back to the States. Almost wrecked it close to Little Rock AFB when he was bringing a dead pig who was going to be the guest of honor at a BBQ. Just him and the pig in the back seat of the car when something started thumping on the back of the front driver’s seat.

The pig was evidently pretty fresh.

Not being part of NATO, it was kind of above and beyond the call of duty. :)

Wiki reads that the Swedish Viggen fighters actually could get a "lock on" the SR71. They had lots of practice.

The lead pilot had a good idea what it was. It's cool that they stayed with the SR.

This one is on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier tied up in NYC. Forget the carrier name.

    The “ USS Intrepid “

Actually, I think it is an A-12.
