Looking for a used compressor, around $350 or so for my garage. Perhaps a box store model would be fine, but I'm looking for names of commercial grade compressors.

You won't be getting a commercial grade compressor for $350

Try Emglo compressors. I got mine from a local auto parts store and he stocks parts
    and oil.

Used industrial compressors are cheap, but you need 480 volt 3-phase. I couldn't give away an Ingersoll screw compressor a couple years ago when selling off all the equipment from the plant I worked in.

They also (usually) don't shutoff when the reservoir tank reaches pressure, they just "unload" the compressor and the motor keeps running to circulate coolant and such.

Let me try this, I'm looking for something that will last. I see some real poor stuff over at Home Depot. Looking for 2 stage, cast iron, motor that can be rebuilt kind of stuff.

Made in China doesn't appeal to me.

Industrial grade may have been a misnomer. What homeownder brands would you recommend looking for in the $350 and under range?

I have a Cambell Hausfield cast iron that I have had for >12 years with no problems and I use it a lot. Just make sure to get a belt driven pump preferrably cast iron from a good name. CH makes some junk now but the IR compressors I have seen still appear to be made well.

In that price range I think there is some harbor freight stuff that gets good reviews.

Try Craigslist. At that price point I wouldn't expect much though. A good compressor I would put double that used to start on the low end.

I've seen domestic made Speedaire compressors in your price range on Craigslist. Grainger sells them new. Parts appear to be available as well.

Go to an auction at a closing business and you should have no problem getting a nice screw style compressor (they are quiet and high CFM) for cheap. Your problem will be powering it....you MIGHT find a 220v single-phase unit but almost all will be 3-phase 220 or higher.

Try eBay and use the "advanced search" to limit the distance to your local area so you can pick it up. There seems to be more of that type of equipment there than on craigslist.

Again, doubtful you will come close to what you are looking for for $350 short of buying something used. What kind of things are you going to use it for? What's the rated CFM your tools require? Is this for daily use? Occasional use? Your question is meaningless without this information.

Here are two used options locally.

    1. Campbell-Hausfell 4.5 HP 20 gallon horizontal unit. Older model. Has gauges. Uses a belt. Made in USA. Looks to have been use commercially.Comes with hose and tire inflator. $200

    2. Craftsman red 2 HP 33 GAL upright. Fairly new. $200

    Thoughts on either of these?

Here's the psi information that jkknight requested:

    1. Campbell-Hausfell model VA500001AJ:
    125 psi max
    8.1 @ 40psi
    6.4 @ 90psi
4.5 HP 20 gallon horizontal unit. Older model. Has gauges. Uses a belt. Made in USA. Looks to have been use commercially.Comes with hose and tire inflator. $200

    2. Craftsman Model 919.167320
    150 psi max
    8.6 scfm @ 40psi
    6.4 scfm @ 90 psi
    single cylinder, oil free
red 2 HP 33 GAL upright. Fairly new. $200

Definitely looking used. Most of the time will be using an impact wrench and air rachet for casual auto mechanic stuff at home.

    Thoughts on the psi ratings?
