A lot of Italians I know take this day very seriously. After years of being portrayed as organ grinders and mafiosos, I say let them have the day. They've made many great contributions to our nation and our world.

Columbus actually discovered the islands that are today called the Bahamas and Cuba. He made 4 voyages from Spain and some think he was never actually on the North American continent. As for the poor souls he corrupted see: http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Caribs.aspx#1

blame it on the Vikings, they were the first Europeans to set foot on North America.

It should be a day of learning.

Learning what happens when you don't have a good immigration policy.:whistling:

Christoforo Colombo might have been Italian but he was sailing as a contractor to Spain so, if anything, it would be a Spanish holiday, not Italian .

I'm with you on the useless holiday thing. We can celebrate without having the day off. Talk about government waste.

I can justify having off on the major holidays but not on these lesser ones. I recognize what the day means and why it's important but seriously, we don't need to take the day off and waste a bunch of money paying people to have it off.

Remember that next time the post office complains about being in the red!
