    Colt Government Model 1911A1 serial number C186737 - Pistol and conversion unit were shipped in mid-1940 to Abercrombie &Fitch. Pistol has the New Safety Device (NSD) also know as the Swartz Safety. This set belonged to Navy lieutenant, Gifford C. Ewing of Amenia, New York. Ewing was soon promoted to Captain of a minesweeper working in the Panama Canal Zone. After the war, Gifford Ewing earned a Ph.D. in oceanography and went to work as a researcher at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California.
