54 years after Colorado enacted its prohibition of the folding knives with blades that pop out from their handles with the push of a button or a lever, a bipartisan group of state lawmakers is trying to repeal it. The state legislature's Senate Judiciary Committee voted 4-1 this week to send the bill to the full Senate for consideration. The bill would also legalize gravity knives with blades that can be flung open from their concealing handle, also with one hand. Knife rights activists say the bans in Colorado and those still in place elsewhere violate Second Amendment rights of users because switchblades are normally possessed by law-abiding citizens for legitimate uses. At least 11 states have repealed switchblade bans in recent years but 14 states still have them.

When I was a kid the ban was in place in Colorado, and we wanted nothing more than to have a switchblade. A friend had one his dad brought back from Germany in WW2 - what a precision machine. We'd sneak it out of his dad's drawer, pass it around and mess with it, then put it carefully back.

I'd also like to see Colorado rescind the ban on 30 round mags as well.

And they may as well re-criminalize marijuana for the hat trick!

Oh wait, I forgot. We don't have Trump as governor.

Interesting. Most politicians don't pay knife rights any mind.

What was the original logic for banning switch blades in the first place? I don't get it

Given that assisted opening knives are just as fast as switchblades, banning switchblades no longer makes any sense.

I'm guessing that the bias against switchblades started around the time of the release of the movie "Black Board Jungle"(1955). It made them "scary".

That and/or "West Side Story", pretty close to the same time.

I think Tennessee got rid of the switchblade law a couple of years ago. I had a Kershaw speedsafe that I had to leave at the entrance to a Federal Faculty (USACE), the guards kept calling it a switchblade - I tried to explain the state and federal definitions of a switchblade - several times. They were too stupid to understand. They were also too stupid to understand that the switchblade law in Tennessee now longer existed.

I have a linerlock folder without a spring assist (Boker Damascus) that I can open faster than a speed safe, and possibly faster than a true swithblade. Basing laws on bias created by movies is stupid.

Legislators need to legislate to keep their jobs, but legislation that addresses problems is a lot more work than banning products.

It's actually a gray area, from what I've read and been told by local law enforcement. So I guess if you use one you need a lawyer.

The funny thing is it's still legal to sell auto knives here, just not to own them I guess. I can go into any local knife store and buy one but I guess when I walk out the door I'm breaking the law. I have no idea why and the shop owners haven't been able to really answer that question.

Someone watched West Side Story and decided that only criminals and gangs had switchblades?
