I ordered a "RED NECK deer feeder" from Amazon.com that will arrive today:

I was talking on the phone to the wife of the cattle farmer next door to me. She had called to check on my wife and I to make sure we are okay during this corona virus and wanted to know if we needed anything. I assured her that we were okay. I told her that I wanted to buy 50 pounds of corn from her husband because I bought a deer feeder. She laughed and said that he sold off all his corn last fall. I asked, "But don't you feed corn to you cows in the winter?" She explained that they do not feed corn to the cows. The cows eats "silage." Then she had to explain what silage is. Darn, You got to know a lot to be a farmer!

My question is, what is the best thing to put in the above feeder to attract deer?

Hard to judge how big that feeder is from the picture. Could you add something for reference?

The deer pellets from my local mill smell like molasses

that gets me coming in and reduces the squirrels and birds a bit

Corn is typically what they feed deer. You can buy it at a co-op or agricultural supply store. Places like Tractor Supply will sell it in 50 # bags. You might also consider buying a block of salt. Serious hunters here will plant a food plot that attracts deer well into the colder months. If you are still thinking about hunting deer, get familiar with your state's game laws about feeding deer.

Daddy always buys the commercial bags of deer feed to load the feeders.

Corn is candy to deer. And cheap.

Just plant rhododendrons. Stupid deer had all the woods of Maine to nibble on, but they all zeroed in on my little hedge the winter after I planted them.

And Hostas. They came right up to the front door to mow them all down.

At first my wife thought the deer were so cute. Now she considers them her mortal enemy.

Cheapest corn you can find and a mineral block will keep them happy.

Deer will eat pretty much any grain, nut, fruit or vegetable that will grow in North America. They will also eat buds off leaf trees and tree tips off some evergreens. We had a bad winter 18'-19' and all the small cedars got decimated around here. When the snow melted some had more foliage on the bottom foot than they had on the other five.

If you have CWD in your area you might want avoid a feed source like that or mineral licks.

Yep, they love Hostas but leave the weeds. I was spraying a mix of dawn detergent on them but that just slowed them down.

Corn will attract the deer, but it is an energy feed. for antler growth and conditioning you need a protein type feed. You should be able to find some "deer pellets" at a local farm/ranch store, but they will be more expensive

I just moved on my own acreage and put out a feeder with corn and a salt block . I have seen 1 doe , but she isn’t eating at the feeder . The crows are not even eating it much . I was throwing out crushed corn , before deer season and the crows loved that . I also planted some winter oats and I saw deer poop in it during the winter , but none now .
