Why does it seem that all Chinese restaraunts use the same food containers and distribute the same style menus? We all know the white waxboard containers with the red writing and little metal handle. I think they are the same all over the US. And at least around here, they all have nearly identical menus....all printed the same with the same food photos.

Italian places all use different boxes / containers / menus.......how odd.

Because that is the only thing the Chinese excel at, copying. They have no real ingenuity to speak of.

I wish that were the case, I miss the boxes. Here in N.VA, they all seem to have converted to plastic containers. Ticks me off.

They do seem to operate as a cartel. Standard issue shrimp fried rice is 6-8.95, General Tso's chicken, Orange chicken, Sesame chicken, its the same everywhere!

They also joke that like Mexican and Italian food, its all the same SE#% cooked different ways. AND IT IS!

The real kicker is it resembles very little about real chinese food. Most Chinese have not seen our greasy fried chinese stlyle american fried food.

Don't forget the requisite carp-filled aquarium out front, next to a potted norfolk island pine.

I often wonder the same thing. I usually judge by the egg rolls if they make their own food.

But it's ALWAYS ready in 10 minutes, any size order.:dunno:

I prefer Vietnamese - has to be made fresh. It is very difficult to prepackage it. Also, it is generally very authentic. I have been to Hanoi and Saigon (I refuse to call it HCMC). The food is definitely better down south.

Chinese food sold in the US is 99% Americanized. They have figured out what appeals most to Americans and that is what they sell. The Chinese are very astute business people. Food in China is very different than in the US. Within the PRK there are 56 ethnic minorities and many different regions and cuisines.

i thought the same too, Hanoi in my opinion have very plain food while Saigon has a variety of spices, fresh vegetables, and a better atmosphere

no wonder the north wanted Saigon so bad

I notice "Mexican" restaurants around here are usually the same way.

Same refried beans, same chips, same salsa, etc., at every single place.

Consider that's where it originated from...

Saigon food is more varied due to the influences of France, America, Cambodia, Siam, Malay and India.

I tell you, whoever is dealing the waxpaper boxes, waxpaper egg roll bags, fortune cookies and crispy noodles is one hell of a business man. Let's not forget the soy sauce and other condiments are the same brand wherever you go. A damn Chinese restaraunt monopoly.

BTW, the best Chinese food I've ever had is Golden Panda in Jupiter, FL......just a little plug.

When I was in Shanghai the office manager told me that KFC is much more popular than McDonalds because Chinese don't care for the sauce on the Big Mac and McD refuses to change it. KFC, on the other hand, has scrapped the mash potatoes for noodles to cater to the local preferences.
