Chief Defends Driver Who Didn't Intervene in Roadside Rape

TOLEDO, Ohio — An Ohio police chief is defending a driver who called 911 but didn't do more to stop a woman from being raped along a street in broad daylight.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre says the witness did the right thing and could have risked her own safety if she tried to intervene.

In an interview with The Blade published Saturday, the driver said she feels guilty and hasn't been able to sleep well since the Tuesday attack.

On the 911 call, the driver describes a man removing the pants from a woman lying on a sidewalk. Police say several other people called 911 but they weren't sure if it was a fight or something else.

Police have charged a 15-year-old with rape and robbery.

It's hard to make that decision for someone else. If it were me, I also would not forgive myself for not helping.

But, a frail? Hard to say.

And, she did help by calling 911.

If she really feels bad then she needs to buy a gun, get some training and be ready the next time.

sounds bad but,if that`s all she thought she could do to help,at least she did something.
sad that if the witness was a guy i`d be calling him a coward.

It's an really unfortunate situation, but how could the woman witnessing the attack risk putting herself in danger? It sounds like she did the smart thing in this case. It's awful to have to make that choice. Perhaps, if both the victim and witness had been armed, this wouldn't have happened.

At least nobody stopped to film it or to join the rapist. Maybe there's still some hope for humankind.

Many years ago, back in Russia, I was walking with my girlfriend. All of a sudden we started a playful fight and I gently dropped her into the snow. That same instant, a young woman jumped out of her car and ran to us to make sure it wasn't what it looked like. She was ready to intervene and defend a fellow sister.

Hmm. It's gotta be hard to find a place to shoot the guy with him so close to the victim like that.
Maybe approach him from behind and put a foot in his luggage a few times.

Got to be hard -- especially for a woman, elderly person, etc -- to just sit back and call 911 in a situation like that. I can't imagine not DOING something, seeing something that horrible happening right in front of me...but it's not my place to make that call for a woman, or anyone else, I guess.

Your state laws may vary, but in Kentucky, deadly force is allowed to prevent forcible sexual intercourse. One could open up a few new holes in the kid in my state, and even in the big city, no one would bat an eye.

In her case, it's better to be an alive witness and not a dead/injured hero. I can understand her guilt though...

I would for sure approach a situation like that.

Now obvious domestic violence....nope. 911 and stay near by. I'm not gonna stop a dude from beating his old lady only to have both of them turn on me. Too much crazy emotion in that situation. She's gonna have to take some lumps till the cops get ther unless it really looks life threatening. I hate to sound like a jerk, but it's a WHOLE lot of trouble to get in for "not my problem".

I understand your review of what happened, but what the shucks is an old unarmed woman doing driving the Chief of Police around anyway? Now, I understand he wasn't in the vehicle at the time. But what if he had been and someone wanted to hurt him, what could she have done? Just wondering.

I suppose this maybe another case of carrying an employee until their retirement, sounds like it.
