I have (had) a friend a few years back that invited me to a Super Bowl party. He had just moved into a new house so I thought it was perfect, get to see the new house and hang out with some friends at the same time. Then BOOM, he hits me with it. He asked for $20 to help pay for the food. I gave it to him as to not be rude or make a scene. I've thrown dozens of parties, never asked for a dime. In fact I have had people offer and i've given them the old Jersey 'fugggataboutit' lol. Anyways, I can see if you say something before the fact, like at the time of invitation. But wtf, if you can't afford it don't throw the party.

Some of my friends charge, but always a small amount, and it is usually mentioned at the invite. With the amount of parties thrown out here, and for any and every reason (even just for some regular football game, or because someone is going on vacation, or because it is Friday, etc.), it can get expensive for the more frequent hosts.

Does you buddy go by ysr_racer online?

Kidding aside, I would never ask people for money to help pay for a party, but everyone is different. I would also feel angry if I got asked and depending on how well I know the person may just laugh and say, "Ya right," and not give him anything. Or say I didn't bring any cash and then never pay him. If I don't get invited back I wouldn't care.

That's pretty cheap to ask while you're at the party.

I've asked friends if they want to pitch in for a PPV to watch the fights but the superbowl is free. And i didn't ask for money for food or drinks.

If you really want to have some fun, drop an anonymous note to Roger Goodell that he's charging to watch... HH

Did he ask specifically for twenty dollars in cash or did he ask for " an envelope of Jackson kindness?"

Cheapness is almost like a sickness. Some people are just so consumed with money it's sad really. I honestly feel bad for some people. I tend not to affiliate with cheap people but sometimes it's unavoidable, I get that.

Whenever we go to a restaurant and have to all chip in for the bill I usually throw down $100 bill or whatever double my share will be so I don't have to be involved in figuring out what everyones owes. Life is too short to worry about money.

I would more expect him to accept the terms, then give a bad check as payment.

I refuse to be on a bill with others. You always end up paying for someone elses food.
I always get a separate check.

Same here. Of course, I also pay for the waitress's kid's college costs while I have my wallet open.

Why not make it a "Superbowl potluck / BYOB cuz we're broke now housewarming party".
That way, people can think about whether they want to participate in advance. But, that kind of a 'surprise' where you put people on the spot gets folks to thinking about a lot more than just whether they want to pay to watch t.v. at somebody else's house.
Or, just leave a 'donations' fishbowl on the t.v.

I sure hope XDrox has spoken with a financial planner. He seems to spend a lot for his salary. XDrox, you need more than your work retirement and social security.

I would have given him a two, two ones, seven quarters, and the rest in dimes, nickels, and least two dollars worth of pennies. And I would have counted it out. Loudly. And if I was not drunk enough to mess up and start over somewhere after ten dollars, I would have faked messing up to start over.

I would have taken a dump in the back of his toilet. AKA: the "upper decker".

I won't get get social security because I'm a teacher.
I will get about 95% of my highest payed year in retirement. I have a great retirement plan. That's in addition to any money I put aside and I put a substantial amount out of every paycheck into a Roth 403B.
I'm all set, I won't be rich, but I'll be happy.

But I do like to spend money. In terms of mortgage and car payment I live way under my means.
