I was going to load an old version of Unreal Tournament, so I popped the CD in the drive. It started spinning, heard it go really fast, then BOOM! I couldn't eject it, so I took the drive out and took it apart.

I remember seeing that happen when high speed drives began to emerge. Never saw it myself though. Was it unreal tournament #1?

That does happen due to the rotational speed. A short time after the first high speed drives came out, the thickness of the plastic "door" on the drives was doubled. On the very early high speed drives the broken CD's would crash through the plastic door.
