While in Walmart the other day I began to wonder - if one does have to use their CCW and the authorities show up, after the event and they want to see your permit, do you have to have it on you or can you have it in your car?

Your weapon and your permit(s) should always be carried together not separately. Some states, if not all, have laws that require you to always have your permit on your person when you carry your weapon, wether it be concealed or open carry.

A responsible gun owner should always have his/her permit(s) and driver license or identification with them at all times.

In my state you have your permit on you as long as you are carrying a gun! No permit; maybe jail till it gets worked out.

Why on earth would you not have it on you, kind of a dumb question.

SC my instructor told me ALWAYS have it on you, even when not carrying.
When stopped for traffic violation, and asked for the usual gammut, say "OK Officer, gladly, but I do need to inform you I am a concealed weapon permit holder in the state of SC and I do/do not have my firearm currently concealed on my person, please advise me on how you'd like to approach this situation before I reach for my documents."
so yes, I'd carry the damn thing with ya ;)
mine is directly behind my license for ease of producing it.

If I don't have to get out of the car, I don't say anything, but I would definitely inform an officer if he wanted me to get out of the car... not that I do anything to merit special attention. I'm very polite, honest, and keep my hands on the wheel and follow directions.

Oh, I do carry photocopies of my military ID, driver's license and CWP. I left the house without my wallet at least once in the last two decades.

I drove across town to a doctor's appointment once and found that I didn't have my wallet. I did have the copies of ID's and I used a memorized credit card to make payment. My memory might fail temporarily at times, but I remember some things I use all of the time.

    Wynn :)

I never have liked having anything in my pants pockets - when I work, shop, etc., so I lock my wallet in my car. That will now change.
Thanks for all of the replies.

Back when I lived in NH and had a NH CCW permit I kept a small copy of it rolled up and inserted into the empty space behind the mag well in my G17 carry pistol.

Wow! That could be as much fun as saying loudly "I have a gun!" Let me show you my permit, officer! :-D

WV requires a permit holder to have it on their person while carrying. It's the same size and material as a credit card so it's no big deal to have it in my wallet at all times.

If you carry nothing in your pockets when you shop, how do you carry credit cards, money needed to pay for merchandise?

I'm just the opposite. I have a lot of crap in my pockets, including my CCW permit, but I dislike carrying a gun.

There are holsters for shy gun owners. Empty!

I'm just not that paranoid. If I have a gun digging into my side, it's because something's really spooked me. Otherwise, I just don't feel the need to be armed when I'm not out hunting or target shooting. I might have a loaded weapon in the night stand or vehicle, but odds are, there's target ammo in it.

You must be a big guy to not be CCWing. I'm 6 foot, 230lbs here in rural VT. Not much crime, not counting the infamous Zantop murders across the CT river from here. My G17 is a carefree 34 ounces in my Bianchi 4/4L holster (OWB). No ax murderers will get at me.

Whatever gets you thru the night. I'm not judging anybody. That's just me... I believe there are few situations that drawing a weapon can't make even worse.

For that matter, there aren't many things that can be happening to you that the police can't show up and make worse.

There are very many personal decisions required when you make the big decision to accept responsibility for your own defense. When and where to carry are two of them. Yours may change over time for a variety of reasons, or, they will remain the same. The important fact is you made the big decision...
