Driver of the #19 in Sprint Cup, Carl Edwards announced in a press conference today he was hanging up his helmet.
Wonder what is really going on?
He came close to winning the Sprint Cup Championship last November at Homestead, only to be involved in a crash (his fault) with Joey Logano.
He is suddenly retiring now that we are about 6 weeks away from the kickoff of the 2017 season at Daytona.
His replacement is Daniel Suarez, just crowned Xfinity champion in November. Daniel is a native of Mexico, and Nascar is eager to expand its fan base.

They need to expand their fan base as they have run off all the good ole boys that made the sport what it is. It's on it's way down and as soon as it's diversity program hits high gear it's headed into the fourth turn with a stuck throttle and no brakes.

He has made a fortune. There are always some willing to walk away to enjoy that just as some who will stay well past their prime.

I don't get it, especially since I think he had what it takes to win the championship.

But if he wants to, good for him. Who am I to judge.

Thing is, people like Carl Edwards are not like you and me. Carl stated in his press conference for the past 20 years he thinks about almost nothing but racing. He even dreams about it at night. Its going to be hard to change gears (no pun intended). I suspect in a couple of years he might be back, maybe on a limited basis, or subbing for someone else.

Maybe he'll just go back to real racing, like Tony Stewart. NASCAR is not racing, it's entertainment with an emphasis on speed. Similar, not the same.
