I'm an Electronics Engineer by profession. In the previous companies I've joined the I.T. folks (programers, Com Sci) get the best pay for entry level positions. This is also true for experienced people even if they don't handle people (management positions)... I have a friend who is an HR manager who had his fair share employers, the experienced IT folks command a good price - and sometimes walk away from their offer since they can get employement here or abroad.

Ditto on machining. Everyone I know that has a machine shop, at least in the U.S., cannot find enough quality help. People that actually know how to cut metal are in BIG demand.

Suggest look for something towards engineering robotics. That is big bucks future and will be a specialization in demand.

Everything is going towards robotics from military drones, mars rover and soon there will be civilian application for all of these.

Obviously the tech is secret but eventually they will filter to civilian use.
