I'm tired of all the BS in public education... The city that I live in is hiring for the firefighter academy this month, and I'm thinking of trying out. I workout on an elliptical machine every morning for 35 minutes, been doing it for 2.5 years, but I know that's not going to be enough to help me on the physical test...what do I need to do?? I've only got about 2 weeks until the test??

    Thanks!!

    Ben

Well, maybe things are different in your state, but being a teacher in Texas is getting worse by the minute... Thanks, and good luck to you also!!!

    Ben,

Being a fire fighter is the best job that I have ever had. However our dept. is the problem. Too long of a story but lots of morale, union vs. management problems that never got any better over the years.
Teaching is still pretty good here in Eastern PA. as long as you stay out of the cities.
PM me if you need any help or advice.

    Scott

Stay in education and go volunteer somewhere.

I'm also a coach, so the volunteering thing wouldn't work too well... I basically work 7am-7pm, Mon-Sat, from August til April when all sports are finished...

I'm taking the reverse route from you and our experiences differ, so what I have to say may not matter. I started volunteering at 15, EMT at 18 and police officer at 20. I left L.E. to finish a degree and now I'm headed to graduate school and hope to teach eventually on the college level. Some people find public safety the be-all/end-all, but I was left unfulfilled after 10 years. Firemen and cops tend to be very specialized and narrowly focused, which for the job is a good thing, but it can also be frustrating. If you truly feel "called" to firefighting, pursue it with all you can.

I know nothing about Texas, and I know your time is limited, but if part-time options are available you may want to pursue that as well since you could have the best of both worlds.

We need teachers like you to stick around and impact our kids positively! There's nothing more meaningful than that.

I think that's one of the biggest reasons I'm getting out of education, is that I believe I'm not making a big enough impact on the kids that I teach/coach. The biggest thing I see impacting the kids today are drugs. (not like it used to be when kids went out and drank beer on the weekend...now they're going and snorting coke, doing some meth, or smoking a joint before school or at lunch to get them through the day) (BTW, this is part of what pisses me off...we get a kid after lunch that smells like he just smoked 5 lbs of marijuana, and nothing can be done...we just have to light candles to cover the smell and let them stay in class and fall asleep or whatever...) It's REALLY depressing seeing what MANY of these kids are doing to themselves and their future.

I went and picked up a study guide for the entrance exam last night and started going through it. I also called a guy I know who is a firefighter for the city and asked him what all I had to do on the physical part of the test. I hope my 32 year old body can do what mind thinks it can...lol I take the test on the 16th, so I've still got a little time to improve!

    Thanks!
