Des Moines man just says no to attempted carjacking

    REGISTER STAFF REPORT • February 4, 2010
A crime early today on the north side of Des Moines is listed as an attempted robbery because the intended victim refused to cooperate.

Police said Lloyd Stump, 47, pulled into the Walgreen Drug Store parking lot at 104 E. Euclid Ave., about 1:20 a.m. A masked man pointed a gun at Stump as he walked toward the entrance.

"Give me the keys to your truck," the gunman screamed.

Stump responded with a common expression that can not be repeated here, but indicates a refusal to cooperate. He continued walking toward the entrance.

The gunman screamed, "I'll shoot you in the back of your head." Stump continued on, entering the store. He called 911 and reported the attempted robbery.

The gunman ran away. No shots were fired.

Stump told officers he could not identify the man as he wore a mask and was completely covered in dark clothing.

It was very nice of the paper to publish his name, it should make it easy for the goblin to find him later.

What was the guy doing at walgreens at 1:20am? Good thing the perp didn't shoot. Good for this guy not just rolling over and saying "don't hurt me".

Just the other week I filled script for my daughter after 1 AM on a Tuesday. We didn't get her out of the ER until just before then.

Based on your avatar, I think we could get along just fine as friends.

That said, why would Walgreen's even be open at that hour, if nobody should be there? He had every right to be there.

Same here, spent the evening in the ER as I passed a couple of kidney stones that had to look like crack rocks...

I got outta there just after 1... I was so drained, someone could took my wallet and shoes and I prolly would not have argued....

I always thought I was fairly tough till that...

I was just asking the question why he might be there, not questioning the guys character. I know that some of their stores are open all hours, I was just wondering why he might be there. I'm not suggesting he didn't have the right to be there.
Good for him refusing to be a victim, personally I would have liked the story better if he CCW & blew the POS away.

Am I the only one here who thinks that saying a "common expression" in the face of a robber who is pointing a gun at you means "small brains" rather than "big balls"?

As I said in my original post, maybe not the smartest thing to do, but it worked out in his favor. Most of these ******bags are too much of a ***** to follow through with their empty threats anyway. There's always the chance you could wind up on the losing end, but if that's the case why not go out fighting back instead of rolling over? :dunno:

John, do you have anger issues? :dunno: He was probably a misunderstood minister as opposed to a worthless POS. :whistling:

Unfortunately we don't have a competitor paper. Had a couple independent papers but the Register eventually bought them because they didn't like the negative stuff those papers printed about the Register. Of course the Register didn't decided to buy until circulation for the independents increased.

Firstly, insulting an armed robber and then turning your back to him is not exactly "fighting", more in the lines of "civil disobedience".

And secondly, the prize was hardly worth dying for.
