Simple question, but we can't seem to find a definitive answer.

I've got a bet going with a friend, about the biggest motor ever used in a front-wheel drive car.

    I say it's the 72 Cadillac Eldorado with a 500 c.i. with front-wheel drive, he says B.S.

Anyone know for sure what vehicle takes the prize?

    I think you are
    right

The Cadillac Eldorado, with front-wheel drive introduced in 1967, holds the record for the largest engine in a front-wheel drive production vehicle, at 8.2 L (500 in³), starting with the 1970 model, lasting until the 1976 model year.[citation needed]

Didn't some of the Dodge Vipers come with a 510 cu.in. engine?

GM used to sell an engine that was 572, but they didn't put them in cars that I know of. It came in a box. Okay, a crate.

I recall seeing a show some years ago where they took the body off one of those Eldorado's and did the 1/4 mile. It was around 10 seconds IIRC.

You will be hard pressed to find a FRONT wheel drive Viper.

Off the top of my head, the 500 ci Caddy is the right answer.

Guys, if you go way back to the 20's/30's there were several MASSIVE engines that were of very limited production. I bet Bill Powell will know of some. IIRC Cadillac made a 699 (799?) or some-such engine at one time.

Yes that is the largest engine 8.2 litre or 500ci, in a car with front wheel drive that I know of. I know the first time I saw one I freaked out that it was FWD with that monster engine in it. I know of no others.

Put a beer on it and tell him to proove it!
I'll MAIL you a beer if he can proove you wrong!

The 500 was dropped in 1975 for the 425, but until then it was the largest
displacement, front wheel drive, factory produced, powerplant.

Acording to Wiki (so who knows? ) It is the Cadillac.

    Again, front wheel drive.

You have cars like Avant and Cord, but they did not have motors that big.

Sounds right. I used to hit the junk yards every week looking for those 500cu caddy motors. They make swap kits so you can use that motor in other GM cars (Chevelle etc...)

Yea. I got the front wheel drive thing, I was just throwing something out there. However, I may have been smoking crack - it looks like the Cadillac V-16 was only a 452.

Rabbi, thanks for the beautiful pic! Now THAT'S a car! Made out of REAL metal, too, not these 'Pepsi-can' crushable cars they give you these days...

    Thanks everyone for your answers!

Ya gotta love a car made from 4.7 acres of sheet metal!

A friend and I were driving behind a similar barge on a winding mountain highway. With the way the beast was dipping and floating over the bumps, my friend said, "Man, that guy is sailing some rough seas!"

I saw an article where the engine and transmsission from an Eldorado (or maybe Olds Torondo - 455 CID) was installed in a VW Beatle (the old one, not the new one). The engine was in the back seat - with the water pump just behind the drivers' right elbow.
