I use lots of canned tomatoes in cooking, and until recently bought Del Monte, Hunts, Contadina, etc.

Then I tried Venecia and Cento brands of Italian tomatoes.

I really like the Cento. Both of these brands are so much tastier than the usual suspects. They cost more, but I think they are worth it. The Cento site has some good recipes too.

Anyone else have a favorite brand of canned tomatoes they would recommend?

When I want to toss some tomato chunkies into a recipe sometimes I'll use Stewed tomatoes...
They're a recipe unto themselves and really can do the trick...

Like when I heat up a can of baked beans, which are sometimes too sticky and too sweet...

A can of stewies, juice an' all makes them just spectacular!
Served with grilled hot dogs or whatever...

I went for Nina brand. I made the baked ziti recipe out of the Sopranos cookbook and wanted what I perceived to be traditional ingredients (well, if I actually pureed them myself it would be best, but Nina seemed like a good selection).

Tell ya what - a drop or 3 of Dave's Insanity sauce into your pot of Italian gravy is good stuff;f

    HOME CANNED!

Nothing store bought can even compare:(

Unfortunately, I am down to four quarts of home canned so I will be joining you among the cans of tomatoes, at least until I can start canning this summer.... I prefer Contadina or something close to that. They taste less "tinny" than other brands I have tried.

Dei Fratelli are the best from the store, in my opinion. Parmalat and Cento aren't too bad either.

The best tomatoes are said to come from the San Marzano, Italy. I don't have a can of the ones I like best but I remember they are in a mostly blue can. There really are differences, I once bought several brands of peeled tomatoes and drained them in a strainer to see what was left then did a taste test. If your gona make a ton of sauce its worth the trouble. I didn't throw any of the tomatoes away--i just went back to the market and bought the winner in quantity.

Really good brands remove the inner goop that contains the seeds leaving the best part of the tomato.

Italian markets can have great deals on case prices.
