How is that even possible? My instincts want me to blame liberalism, but this is also downright dereliction of duty (and insanity) on behalf of every person involved in that decision.

Ok, so it's one thing to find him not criminally responsible for reasons of insanity. But if he is so insane that he beheads and eats someone, he needs to be committed.

One more reason why I don't want to go to Canada.

Side note - I saw that but couldn't edit it unless I overlooked it. I was assuming you can't edit your own thread titles in this sub forum, because I've done it in political chat.

Make the doctor criminaly responsible for any furture acts of his now free patient and I think his medical opinion would change instantly.

You're scared to go to Canada because of that guy?

Canada is one of the coolest places I've been. Never had a bad time or met bad people, excluding the border customs people.

No matter how you slice it, the cannibal/beheader has a responsibiity to take his meds, nothing can relieve him of that. If he is of diminished capacity and can't be trusted to take meds and is violent, then he should be committed. Simple insanity. Don

    I have ALWAYS said that.

EVERYONE, Judges, Juries, Parole Boards, etc, that releases a killer, that goes on to kill again, should be charged with the crime to.

Canada? Canada? What about O.J.? Casey Anthony? Scared to go to Canada, indeed. Let's look at our own justice failures. Jeffrey Dahmer was stopped and questioned about a young man who said Dahmer had handcuffed him and sexually assaulted him. It was dismissed as "A lover's spat."

That guy doesn't scare me. But their PM, Trudeau, is a certified Stalinist nut case.

And Canada elected this guy. That is where, we begin the scare!

Liberalism IS to blame! Liberalism is a deadly serious mental disorder and is highly contagious to those with only marginal intelligence.

The idea that someone could commit a crime that horrific and go without any real punishment just because they're crazy, is actually shocking to me, and we aren't shocked by much these days.

Take medication remains "sane" and not a risk.

Stop taking medication and all bets are off and anything is possible.

Whooohoooo, sounds like a great neighbor.

At some point we need to stop caring why someone did "it" and just eliminate the problem.

Don't f'n care why ..... Not my problem.

Not even subject to monitoring? Simply stunning. Schizos are notorious for stopping their meds. If this guy kills again the blood is on Canada's hands.

This not as straight forward as it appears.

I am as "law and order" as anyone. But this man was found not criminally responsible for the evil act due to mental illness, and apparently properly so.

So what do you do with a person like that? Keep him in the mental hospital forever? My first response is yes, and most here would probably agree. But mental illness is not static. And so the question is not whether the man is criminally responsible. That has been answered. The question is whether his mental illness has been treated after nine years, and whether he poses an ongoing threat. If it is true that his illness is mitigated, and if it is true that he no longer poses a threat, then what rational purpose is served by ongoing incarceration?

Again, this is not easy. And I am subject to changing my views. My first compulsion with anyone who volitionally engages in criminal acts is to throw down some Sharia law on their necks. I get it. But a schizophrenic's bad acts are not volitional, any more than a man with Alzheimer's is responsible for getting lost on the way home from the park. And if the schizophrenic is treated, and that's a big "if", then the only purpose in ongoing incarceration is to make GT members feel good. And that's no reason at all.
