No government, no police, no fire department, no taxes (!), but also no supermarkets, no standardized money system, no infrastructure...I mean, total TOTAL freedom but also complete accountibility for your own health and safety.

Can you make it in that kind of environment?

    How about the average American?

With 330,000,000 Americans it doesn't matter whether you know how to or not. That's a lot of people fighting over resources.

Not going to happen. NO WAY there would ever be a world without taxes.

We’re prepped for that and even have ranch as an alternate bug out location.

    As far as surviving indefinitely?
    Not likely. Too many unknowns
and that would be a nightmare scenario no matter how well we were prepped.

There wouldn't be 330 million Americans for long; the die-off would be massive, in several stages.....

Living in suburbia, this imaginary scenario would probably have me killed off by roving gangs/looters. One guy with an AR can only last so long and by the time you fight off the first couple if you get lucky, you'll have drawn attention as the guy with some guns and ammo. You gotta sleep eventually. Moving out is risky because you'd be entering somebody else's turf and potentially getting ambushed along the way.

In these types of areas joining a group of some sort would be your only chance. Ultimately, somebody will assume power and will claim to offer protection in exchange for your loyalty, if you bring something useful to the table and you're worth more alive than dead. If not, they'll kill you and have your things.

More rural folks probably have a better shot.

Well, if it's truly a Road Warrior environment and I don't have to worry about pollen, pet dander, and various allergens, I'd have an advantage over actual daily life. But, once I run out of contact solution and my glasses break... ☹️

Hah, probably at least a part of my thinking if I'm honest.

Really though, how often in history have there ever been long term "every man for himself" scenarios without people assuming power one way or another? Some people want power and other people want security and protection.

    Let's get real here.

Even folks in the country can't survive anymore. Kids don't shoot, sit on the phone all day. Dad is on Oxycontin, Mom weighs 300 pounds.

99% of Americans couldn't make it two weeks. The second the grocery stores were looted, there would be no food and once the power is gone, nobody would have food or potable water anyways. The country folk would be in the best shape by far as they would still be able to hunt and are smart enough to get by for quite a while. I think that even most of them would struggle with no power grid or resources to build unpowered machines needed to pump water, make weapons, etc.
I live in a small town, so I'd be in trouble. I'd run out of food and water pretty quickly and then I'd be screwed. I could handle other stuff just fine, but the no food and water part of it would be impossible to overcome.

Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.

In a Mad Max, Walking Dead world, I would probably be an extra. Killed off camera.
