I've been looking for pants that fit 38-40" waists at local shops like EMS, Dick's, and Sports Authority. Problem is that they either don't make them big enough or when they do, the legs are about 10" longer than they need to be.

Where can I find pants that'll fit a husky dude (me) with zip-off legs and proportional length?

Try finding jeans with an inseam number larger than the waist number. Almost impossible.

I'm pretty darn sure Columbia makes what you seek.

I'm between a 38-40/29 and 38-40/30. Relatively common sizes in jeans; doesn't seem it on camping pants.

Thanks for the input so far!

REI carries Columbia, Hardware, North Face and a bunch of other brands.
BTW...the zip-off-leg pants are called "convertable"...and if you're looking for the lightweight nylon, they're called "packable" (they're actually made to fit entirely inside they're own back pocket, which then zips shut...giving you a pair of pants that will fit in a sandwich bag....handy on a trek). As far as sizing....dunno. They're kinda marketed at the outdoorsy types.

Some are runners, some are blockers. I'm an outdoorsy blocker :)

Another brand to consider is Nautica.

My wife bought me a pair a few years back because she thought I could wear them. They were too large, but I do recall them being something like a 38/30 or 40/32.

I've owned a pair. Great pants.

Gander Mountain's house brand may have them as well. I LOVE the heavy weight khaki pants.

You didn't state an inseam length. . . . just 'proportional'.

    :dunno:

IF you find pants that you like, but, the inseam is too long, go to a local tailor and have them altered.
(I recently had two pairs of pants altered. . . . $5.00 each.)

    These state 31" inseam-

Don't know if they do it for the convertible pants but Cabela's used to hem the inseam for free, least I remember reading that once.

For just shorts to wear in and around the water the Columbia Snake River short can't be beat IMO. Plenty of pockets that zip, no velcro!
