I am looking for a general duty camp knife. The knife has to be used as a chopper (to cut branches, cut kindling, etc.), a digger (for fire pits, some site leveling) and be able to cut rope, food, maybe pry stuff and generally be a utility knife. Is there such a beast? How long should it be? I am not looking for a Rambo knife.

The problem I have with the Glock field knife is that it has a long (for me) blade. Thats a bit longer than I want. I want to stick around 5". Also, the mass of the Glock doesn't look or feel to me like its much of a chopper. At that size I think I would like something like a K-Bar but I am searching for something more refined.

There arnt alot of good 5" choppers.
you need 7"-9" to make a good chopper IMHO.

There are a lot of good 5" camp knive out there do you have a price range in mind?

Hatchets, saws and kurkris make good copanions to a 5" blade and a SAK.

Problem has been solved. I ordered a Becker Companion BK2. Its a heavy duty 5 1/4 inch blade.

FWIW: bladeforums.com and knifeforums.com both have people who eat and breathe this stuff in case anyone else has knife questions.

The Becker line seems to be a good quality knife. The only thing I don't like about them is the sheath is kinda crappy.

I'll second that. What's with this carrying only one blade or pistol when out in the great outdoors?

I think this is exactly what you are looking for. The only thing wrong with it is the $299 price tag. As seen in the movie... "The Hunted" Designed by Tom Brown and made by TOPS knives .
