Question: I had a root canal earlier this week and now I need a cap/crown to cover the old, dead tooth. The endodontist took care of the root canal then filled it. The tooth, though a little sore but getting better, seems to work just fine like it always has -- just that it's dead. Questions is, how long can I go with the tooth as is until I absolutely need to get the crown put on by my regular dentist? The endodontist said I should take care of it sometime within the next month. I'm a little cash-strapped and would like to stretch it out a little longer. The root canal cost me $200 with dental insurance and I know crowns can get expensive as well.

    Anyone know?

    Thanks.

My dentist says the temporary crown/build-up stuff can start to break down pretty quickly.

Be sure and take a wee-wiz before the crown install.

Yeah, whatever you do, hit the john prior to getting in the chair so you don't scare everyone in the waiting room.

I am not a dentist, but I've had a few crowns on the chewing teeth. I've also had one root canal. I recently had my last crown finished.

It might depend on the weakness of the tooth and how much is left. I cracked off the metal filling on the molar and exposed a very weakened 1/4 tooth. I grind at night once in a blue moon, so I didn't take any chances. I got the crown done immediately. I am out of work, but still made this a priority.

I don't know if that is your situation, but you might have to be very careful when you chew or even talk.

I'll hit up the Mrs. later and get back to you.

From listening to shop talk for a long time, I think the issue is that the temporary can come off unexpectedly. Mr. Murphy says it'll be on a Friday evening at 6pm while you're out of town.

In this area the crown will cost you between $800 and $3000 depending on the tooth and the aesthetics required. (front tooth?). See if you can find a dentist in your area with a CEREC 3D machine (ask). They can put a permanent crown on in about an hour with superior fit and materials, 1 visit only. More importantly, many of them offer lifetime 100% warranties on those crowns because they can save it into the computer and re-mill it really inexpensively should it break or fall out.

There is no temporary at this point. The endodontist just did his drilling for the root canal then filled the tooth -- kind of like a filling. My regular dentist will do the temporary and eventually the real crown. I just want to delay the next step of visiting the dentist.

    Yikes!!!! :wow:

I had no idea. I thought it would be around $300-$500. :crying:

It's a back molar. I sure hope our dental insurance picks up a lot of that.

Will ask and get back to you.

Know that many non-CEREC dentists will only require a portion of payment upfront (usually what the lab charges them to fabricate it) with the balance due when it is installed. Usually a couple hundred bucks.

You have a dental school at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Give them a call and see about fees and how quickly you can get it. It will be a fraction of the price.

I hate being cash-strapped. I lost my job a year ago and though I got a new job it pays about half. I'm glad I have a job, though.

They can be inconvenient. However its just a matter of them matching you up with a student who needs to do what you need done, so it doesn't have to be.

Prices should be WAY lower and you will receive EXCELLENT care. Perhaps even better than in many private practices because the instructors will scrutinize the student's work.
