Just wondering if the current Bushmasters are good rifles. I'm looking at one of these on Atlantic Firearms, specifically the XM15 Patrolman model. I'll be purchasing my first M4 Carbine in a few months, but I don't know much about Bushmaster. I noticed that their parent company is Remington....that gives me pause for concern, thanks to Freedom Group's screwups.

I'm also looking at Ruger, Windham Weaponry, Colt (if I can find the 6920), and S&W.

    Thanks!

Probably not the best option anymore but AR's are so easy to build it's kinda hard to mess them up too much. I've got an early 90's BM and it's had zero issues. No telling today.

An original BM Patrolman from the real Bushmaster would be a neat gun to own.

If it’s a Windham Bushmaster, that Patrolman is a fine carbine.

    If it’s a current model Bushmaster, it’s a POS

Then it sounds like I'm going to avoid Bushmaster. Pretty sure this is a new one.

    Thanks everyone.

Jade - Bushmaster no longer exists. Remington completely eliminated the brand about 6 months ago. You will be paying a premium because some folks think that now makes it a collectors item. The S&W Sport II which has the same specs will be about $125 less.

M4's are illegal. You're looking at an AR15. Windham is gtg as is S&W. Colt is overpriced and overhyped, IMO. I would go with S&W Sport II if those were my choices.

S&W is gtg in both 556 and 762. I've had friends pick up both in the last year.

I have a preban Bushy and a postban and both have been fantastic.

Of current rifles that the OP mentioned, I vote S&W. I'd avoid anything made by any of the Freedom Group buy outs. Also, I would not go with Windham because of resale value concerns.

Everything I've heard about Windham has been stellar. I care more about quality than resale value. If I have to sell it off in a pinch, and it's during a panic buy, I can still get twice what I paid for it, circumstances depending.

Maybe, but I know someone who had a Windham for sale forever and nobody wanted it because of the name. I think he ended up selling it for a song.

+1 for avoiding if new. Older Windham, ME mfg’d Bushmasters are solid rifles.

My early manufacture Bushmaster has been a solid carbine, made in Windham they are good to go, avoid all the new ones. Windham firearms hired all the original employees from Bushmaster when they were bought out.. so the quality still shines at their new company.

I would buy a NEW Windham Weaponry AR before I would buy a newer Freedom Group Bushmaster any day of the week. In fact my department issues me a WW modern AR and it is an excellent carbine.

An early Windham ME Bushmaster from the 80's is always a very good and desirable rifle. They were high quality.

I agree. I’ve owned two Windham Weaponry rifles and they were fine ARs.

I have one of the Maine built Bushmasters and it’s an awesome rifle. Not sure how they are now that Remington bought them. Probably not near the quality they once were sadly
