7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes northern Sumatra, Indonesia

What the hell is going on, is this normal for all these earthquakes and were just having slow news days or is this some sort of cycle that happens???

Information saturation. Nothing happens in the most remote corner of the world that isn't on the headlines around the planet minutes later. We're just so much more aware of events that previously went unreported.

There are some concerns -- largely unsubstantiated, in my opinion -- that the constant drilling for oil and pumping of water might cause some issues underground, as reservoirs empty. Something like the difference between crushing an empty soda bottle and a full one, I'd imagine.

I haven't heard anything credible or very serious about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if, we all hear about it again in the future as all the eco-fury continues (if earthquakes keep up, it'll be one more "but what if it's our fault?!" thing for Al Gore to mention).

There have been many geologists interviewed over the last weeks and they all say this is not unusual.

but then again, they are only experts until they are proved wrong..........

The Pacific plate is ringing like a bell. Back and forth, back and forth... reverberations.

I am pretty sure, not 100%, but. When drilling for oil they replace the volume of oil in the ground with another liquid or gas. They use high pressure fluids to push the crude oil out of the ground. This is just from what I have been reading on the subject, I am about to go work in the oil industry, and figured I would do some learning on the matter. If this is wrong someone correct me please.

    It's not unusual.
The fact is that around the Pacific basin there are thousands of earthquakes every year.

The most odd earthquake of all last year was in Midlothian, TX, of about 3 or so. No damage, but there is no fault within 500 miles. Shale gas extraction is the leading suspect.

Before anyone gets all excited about the seeming frequency of quakes, they should know that the US Geological Service has a web site for this stuff. Current probabilities are for 18 7.0+ quakes per year. So far we're actually behind.
