Like the title says. I built a new box and I'm starting from scratch, suggestions?

    TIA

I personally like using VLC. Plays everything I've thrown at it so far. I believe there's also an iPhone app that acts as a remote for it. Well, was at least. I think one of the updates broke the remote but it may have been fixed since.

VLC for ease of use and playing quite a few of the more common types. Combined Community Codec Pack and mplayer for being able to play almost anything you're likely to run into.

    I also recommend VLC.
