...not "cowboy" boots. Your straight up 8" style boots. I don't know the brand, but they look like these:

with a zipper along the inside all the way down.

Mine are not "Danners", this is just a pic I grabbed off the 1st web site I found similar boots on.

What do I have to do, get thicker, longer socks? The top lip of the thing is trying to cut my calf off.

Suggestions along the lines of keeping the boots and making them work would be appreciated.

In lieu of suggestions, I will also accept donations of Vagasil. :)

I work a 24/48 shift. I usually end up taking a few shifts to break mine in. The first shift I may wear mine a few hours just around the station, by about five shifts I am only wearing the new boots.

Wear longer socks until they break in. :)

    That cutting feeling does suck!

Mine feel nice with only short socks but I do remember so bad rubbing in the beginning. Can't remember what I did to get rid of that. Just worked more I believe.

Get yourself some boot oil and oil them at night. Wear them for a week or so and then re-oil them they will be nice and comfortable. They wont be so stiff and it helps the from dry rotting. Oil them about once a month after that. I have a pair of Danner Arcadia and they are the best and most comfortable boots I have ever worn! They will last a long time if you keep them oiled.

Wear them in the shower then go on a road march for about 5-10 miles. They'll be well broken in when your blisters heal.

Long thick socks help for sure. Like someone else stated, oiling them helps break them in quicker also. Boots take a while to break in.

Try and google "how to break in boots"

theres a lot of helpfull pages.

I read up on it at one time when i was required to whear boots.

you have the medical problem known as fat calves. get longer shoestrings, stretch the top of the boot as much as possible after wetting/oiling, and leave more room on the top 3 lace-ups. here are excellent socks. falmouth 2 wool/nylon 2 pack campmor.com 14.98 prod 19482

heavy merino nylon 75/25, best bang buck sock in my experience. lasts. thick. soft.

I wear 8" 5.11 ATAC's and just wear regular calf high socks. They come up pretty much dead even with the top of my boots. They are completely comfortable for a 12 hour shift right out of the box.

I wear Danner GTX Persuit and they are great right out of the box. I have yet to find a better boot. Its hard to say if your boots will get better with time without knowing what you have. I've tried the BATES ultra-lites and they never got any better.

You can also try a longer sock that you can roll down one cuff to double it up, for extra padding.

Like Bowtie I wear Danner or Oakley. I like the Six inch boot over the Eight inch, not what the wife says but they are my boots.

THose look like ThoroughGood boots. They are as lite as sneakers. These are not the Timberlands we wore in the 80's. I have had two pair over the last four years. The souls wear out quicker than I would like... but it's worth it for the lightweight comfort.

Now, I just bought my first pair of Redwing boots. The heel slides a little bit and I'm just now getting to break-in after a month or so.

I wear a pair of Double H work/cowboy boots all the time. No break in, very comfortable. Great for hiking, hunting and general wear.
