Just returned it to the library today. It's what you're looking for.

how far back are we talking? kievan rus.. mongol invasion.. duchy of moscow.. russian empire.. soviet union.. russian republic..?

raw history is GREAT, but if you really want to understand their culture you gotta read the fiction... especially that based on reality (ala Gulag Archipelago by Solzhenitsyn)

hopefully you arent the type of person to get depressed by reading a sad book... because the vast majority of it is sad. (the humor is usually understated but often QUITE funny if you get the context)

here's a good suggestion that is basically the russian version of the US settlement of the midwest/pacific.. the settlement of siberia

    The Forsaken, by Timothy Tzouladis.

It tells about Stalin's Terror, what life was like in the Soviet Union during his time, and covers a little known facet of American history, Americans who emigrated to the Soviet Union during The Great Depression.

    Ask Nestor.
I believe he was force fed their history from the first day in the delivery room at the hospital.

Just remember that different times brought different mindsets and because of that vast territory there is quite a difference in culture between different parts of the former Soviet Union. If you are interested in the current state of affairs it would be helpful to read something from Suvorov.

Good book. Finished reading it just a couple months ago. It's however useful only in relation to the WW2 experience in Russia.
