Military Employs Bomb-Sniffing Robots
Bomb Sniffing Robots
Associated Press | March 30, 2007
Pretty cool, BUT!
When in a convoy escorting or going on patrol speed is life.
Stopping at every suspicious looking object places you in jeapordy.
So this robot like all the others is great for deploying to suspicious looking objects. It can't drive ahead of the convoy and can't match it's speed.
What needs to be developed is an RPV that smells bombs 3 miles in the air like a vulture that smells dead flesh.
That way the RPV is proactive in searching for bombs not reactive.
Can keep up or fly forward to scan or sniff ahead.
Also can lase the roadside bomb.
Good points NN.
A good solution would be to make good use of UAV's and/or helos to scout ahead of the convoy to spot the suspicious objects(SO) before the convoy reaches them. Armed UAV's can disable the SO and still keep a person in the loop.
