Blind Faith...ILS Cat3 approach

    I've shot a few ILS approaches down to mins in a trusty, dusty Piper Arrow. For some reason, this video makes my stomach churn. It's a landing in Zurich. You hear the main wheels contact the runway, but you can't see the runway until the nose comes down and the nose wheel makes contact....that's some serious fog. (And this is in the mountains!!):faint:

    We did something like that as a right seater flying mail into Miami. I quit very shortly after that.

    Hahaha...I always pictured the dog to be more of a rotty.

    Also heard of putting a kitten in the cockpit so the pilot would have something to play with until it was time to taxi in.

    No thanks, if I don't see something by 100 feet, I'm going around.

    Interestingly, in a non-CAT III aircraft with Enhanced Vision (Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) or Millimeter Wave Radar), the pilot will generally have a pretty compelling view of the runway through the Heads-Up Display (HUD) even when conditions are WOXOF, but unless the first officer sees something with his Mark 1-A1 Eyeball at 100 feet, you still have to go around.

    Try shooting an approach like that on NVGs. Seeing the rabbit appear can startle the heck out of you.

    I've used the AN/PVS-6 and the AN/AVS-9 night vision goggles while I was in the service.

    Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS) are easier.

    We were right on the edge of being almost blue water ops with an entire cycle (about 11 jets) airborne when a fog bank closed in around the boat. They decided to give the first few jets a look to see if it were *really* zero/zero.

    When the first guy down the chute called "Clara ball" (3/4 mile, 660 feet, I don't see the ball), the LSO's said "You SOUND good, keep it coming." They gave him another five seconds of no contact (about eight seconds before impact) before they pickled him (waved him off). The jet floored it and broke out, mid waveoff, at about fifty feet above the deck.

    I'm glad I wasn't in that jet.

    (BTW, they launched a couple of tankers and sent the whole gaggle to the beach.)

    No one has ever died due to the execution of a propitious 180 degree turn.

    As Dennis in MA said, there are always other airports.
