Why do people change CCW pistols for the seasons?
I live on the Texas Gulf coast just east of Houston, and EDC my G-17
IWB and one of my Emerson CQC-7ws, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring.
Doesn't being swaddled in a heavy winter coat make it MORE difficult to draw and fire a large pistol.
we have mild winters here and don't need or have arctic rated gear, but wouldn't a powerful but small pistol pocket carried work better under those conditions.
Just curious

People find it easier to dress around a full sized gun in bulkier winter clothing. I carry full size guns all the time, so I know what you mean.

You can hide a Laws rocket under a big winter coat, but can it be put into immediate action?

Put on bulky winter gloves and try using a small gun.

Mostly I think people go to bigger guns in the winter simply because they can much easier. But also, bigger guns are easier to use when burdened with bulky clothing...not the other way around.

I've been carrying a Taurus 650 2" snubby this summer but will go back to the G21SF once the coat is on full time, so once the temp hits about 20.

Im thinking of switching to a g17 for my edc. Why? Because I can conceal it in summer clothes so why not. I don't think a 17/22 size weapon would be any harder to draw in winter attire than a 19/23 size weapon.

I used to rely on a Kel-Tec PF-9 for nine months of the year and a Glock G-32 for the winter months. The PF-9 was replaced by a Steyr S9-A1 and since I can now safely carry +P+ and +P ammo in 9mm the Steyr may become an all-year CCW pistol, possibly alternating JHP self-defense ammo depending on the seasons.

Here in Oregon you have to worry about the local leftist soccer moms screaming when they see a handgun on your hip. That scream always invites the police to bother you.
It's just easier to carry a full size in the winter. But most of us carry two...the main on your hip and a bug in your coat pocket for quick access. What the soccer Moms don't know won't hurt them. Now it's true that to access you main carry is a bit harder then in the summer, but then again we are more aware of our surroundings, and the bug covers you until you can access the main carry.

Some people carry IWB under light weight clothing in the warmer months and then switch to OWB with a larger gun in the winter.

IWB under a shirt or OWB under a coat. I don't see much difference in accessibility.:dunno:

I carry the same year round because I have no fashion sense and can get away with it. If I were to carry a smaller gun during the summer then yes I would carry a larger one during the cold months when clothing allowed.

I am a hour south of Houston so we are in the same weather. :)

When I am bundled up in a parka and gloves working up in the plant structure to get to my radio, or tools etc, it takes a bit of effort.

I have never understood the notion that is is easier to carry concealed in the winter months. In the summer I often wear Hawaiian or similar untucked shirts. I can hide anything up to an UZI under a Hawaiian shirt. In the winter I have to put the silk shirts away leaving me to long sleeve button downs. It is rarely cold enough to justify a sweater or sweat shirt for more than a few days a year here in North Texas.

For those who concur with the smaller gun in the summer approach, please educate me.

FYI - I am genuinely curious. I am not participating in or inviting ridicule.

I would guess that while it may be easier to avoid printing with a heavy winter jacket, and that winter clothing may require some potential need different rounds/penetration, that that might be offset by a slight increase in the possibility of encountering a criminal act in the summer. Not that I am suggesting that they are criminals, but as discussed in another thread I agree with the assesment that the "occupy" protestors' camps will probably get much more empty about the first time it snows. I also do not remember seeing any of the large urban disturbances/riots in snow, although admittedly some sports related events, sadly.

It is different when you live in a warmer climate. I carry my G19 year round cause it is what I shoot the best.I don't think I would carry my G21 during the cold spells we have in Florida.Damn thing is heavy. We also do not have to worry about penetrating heavy clothing. 124gr +P GDHP will do.

It's funny that 10 out of the 16 users posting on this thread live in places that don't have serious winters to speak of. :)
