Really? Nobody has any flying tire stories? I thought for sure GT would have plenty of them.

Wife had a customer long ago, attorneys who specialized in truck tire cases. Their first case was a newlywed couple walking down the sidewalk hand in hand. A semi went by and blew a retread tire. A chunk of the tread decapitated her. They found there were many cases of these retreads exploding all around the country.

Several years ago after I had just moved to Los Angeles I was driving down the 405 one afternoon and watched a wheel come off of a car, bounce over a truck, bounce across the median, bounce on the roof of a car (denting it quite severely) and then rolling across the freeway where someone promptly smacked into it causing a pileup. All of this happened in slow motion as I was observing. It was quite surreal.

I remembering wondering what the person in the car who had the tire land on their roof thought as they couldn't have seen it coming.

    Wow, that's awful.

I've heard that some truckers won't even haul a trailer if it has retreads on it.

Until I saw these videos, I had no idea that loose tires could be so dangerous. Needless to say, I have a healthy respect for them now.

I know a trucker that lost one set of duals of the trailer he was pulling. No idea when or where it happened. Company drove the route could not find them. Nobody called it in. No damage or injuries. People around here have been killed by these.

Had a claim in rural Ohio where a truck lost a tire on a corner. Tire bounced a couple of times and went through the wall of a house on the 2nd floor. Destroyed the bedroom and went through the interior wall into the bathroom.

While not tires or parts of tires, I was eastbound on the Long Island Expressway near the Maspeth Tanks when a flatbed full of welding /medical bottles overturned. Caps weren't part of their safety gear and when all the valves tore off it looked like dozens of huge steel torpedos corkscrewed through all eight lanes. I stuck my head between the handlebars of my bike, nailed it and dodges what looked like the torpedo spread from Hell heading straight at me. HH

That is utterly insane. I've always looked at one of those tires on a Semi, and thought "wow, that's a big tire". I guess it also has some weight to it.....:alex:

A quick google search says the average truck tire weighs between 105 and 110 lbs. Not sure if that includes the rim as well.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be hit by that, thank you.

A lot of those videos were from non English speaking countries. I'd like to believe that we have a little better system in place to reduce the likelihood of this happening very often.

Agreed. But it can happen. I posted this video here a while back:

That guy rolled because his entire rear axle came off.

But I agree....Third World Countries seem to play by different rules.

I saw a semi blow a tire once...you don't want to be around one when it happens.

I was driving down the 405 in my 1966 F100 next to a semi when one of it's tires blew. I thought a bomb had gone off next to me. No damage to my truck but ruined a perfectly good pair of underwear...

A guy I worked with was a bit of a GTI and Golf nut, and had found a diesel Rabbit with low miles. He bought it and had me drive his GTI back from Tampa. We are headed north on I-75 and the right lane traffic is about 15 mph slower than the left lane, so he pulls left to pass and I follow. We are not going speed limit, probably running 80-85, when I see a blur, then a tire lands right in front of me and rolls past, never had time to steer or brake, fortunately just missed it.

A guy pulling a trailer apparently had a bearing come apart, as he is off the road and coming to a stop with a huge shower of sparks flying up. We get past, and about an hour later hear on the radio the north bound lane of I-75 is shut down, one vehicle fire and multiple vehicle pile up.

There's a story about an uncle of mine going around a curve and noticing a wheel passing him. He wondered who lost their tire and found out as soon as the road straightened up.
