Been wanting to try one a few years now and about ready to pull the trigger. The package I want is about $1900. Anyone with experience with the grill?

    Not worth it.

IMHO & experience the Akorn is a better grill.

I have had a big green egg for almost 10 years now and I love it. If I were buying today I would look really hard at the kumodo joe grills. They seem to be a better value currently but they weren't really popular when I bought mine.

For $1900, you can replace your WEBER about 7 times !

We have some close friends that have one and it takes 40 minutes for him to cook a Bratwurst or Hamburger on the damn thing. And that's after the 1 hour heat up time. It's a running joke that you don’t go to their cookout hungry because it's going to be awhile.

So based on that and how much work it is compared to even a regular charcoal grill, let alone the ease of a gas grill...hell no.

ETA: And at that price... extra hell no.

Would you cook on a green egg grill?
Would you, could you, standing still?
Would you, could you, near the lake?
With baked potatoes and a big fat steak?

    I would not, could not...

No frakin' way. Just get a Weber kettle and grill on. Save $1700 and spend it on meat and charcoal.

My sister has one, the above comment about the time is spot on. Takes forever. I love my Traeger pellet grill and really recommend them.

Not even close to being worth it. If you are grilling with charcoal there are a million options that will do it just the same.

They are nice, sure. Waaaaay over priced.

They are to grills as Yeti is to coolers.

If you're exploring ceramic cookers, do some research on a Primo oval.

Get a clean 55-gallon drum and start cutting.

The brand new issue of Consumer Reports....July 2020 recommends the Kamado Joe Classic II.
It's still a thousand dollars though. Of the four tested, the BGE is on the bottom of the ones tested. The Kamado Joe Classic II score is 79, the BGE is 56. I personally don't think either one of them is worth it. I like my three Weber grills, one is LP gas, and one small charcoal Weber and one large charcoal Weber. They work well for me.

I have more than a few friends that have them. The cool factor is way high but they are severely overrated.

As mentioned the Akorn is a very good alternative and is less than $300. It is much more miserly with charcoal than any of the ceramic grills. Close it down and the charcoal quits almost immediately. I normally get over 30 hours with a full load of lump.
And I can be cooking in less than 15 minutes, using a propane torch to light. Someone taking an hour to get going doesn’t know what they are doing.
